Hello Tribal Members,

The Fish and Game Department wanted to give a reminder and some tips for the changing weather as winter is here.

Please be mindful of changing weather and road conditions especially in the higher elevations. Snow has accumulated in the foothills and mountain areas. Please know the limitations of your vehicle and equipment. With the snow and mud, conditions are very slick and your vehicle will be prone to sliding off the road.

Make sure that you are prepared…carry a shovel or other gear in case you get stuck. Remember, tire chains are for getting you out of a situation, not further in. Getting stuck is only one of the hazards, your vehicle may experience problems such as a breakdown. Keep snacks, water, blankets and warm clothing in your vehicle for such an emergency.

If you should have a situation happen in the high country, remember it is much safer for you to stay with your vehicle. The number one mistake people make is leaving their vehicle, leaving them open to the risk of exposure.

Remember, your safety and others traveling with you is your responsibility. Check weather conditions before going out. Evaluate road conditions…just because you have a really cool four wheel drive doesn’t make you invincible. If it doesn’t feel right, maybe it isn’t right. Turn around to avoid getting stuck or having a breakdown.

And the Biggest reminder we can give you is…always let somebody know the area you are travelling to…try not to deviate from the location given, otherwise you risk being the needle in the haystack searchers are searching for

Take care and stay safe during the winter season. Happy holidays.

‼️‼️‼️REMINDER‼️‼️‼️

Highway 91, Interstate 15 or other roadways are not wildlife viewing areas. We know it is exciting to see the elk as they have dropped down to lower elevations, but for your safety, the safety of others and the safety of wildlife, please keep traffic flowing. Roadway shoulders are for emergency stopping only.

Please help us by sharing this post.

Thank you,
Shoshone Bannock Tribes

Hello Everybody,

Just a friendly reminder, wintering elk herds have migrated to our area again this year. Please slow down while traveling on Interstate 15, Highway 91 as well as the Arbon Valley Highway. Elk herds are a little more spread out in different areas this year. Please watch your speeds and scan the area ahead, giving yourself plenty of time to react for animals that may be crossing…especially at night. Please heed the signs that have been posted, they are there for good reason.

Also, please remember, the interstate, highways and other roads are not wildlife viewing areas, they are meant for travel and emergency stopping areas only. If you come across an elk or other wildlife that has been hit within the Fort Hall Reservation, the Tribes does not allow for salvage. This is for the safety of all who are traveling through the reservation.

Please give due respect to wintering wildlife and do your part to not cause undue stress as they are trying to make it through the winter. Please share this post so we can all do out part to keep everyone and our wildlife safe.

Thank you and safe travels.

Shoshone Bannock Tribes
Fish and Game Enforcement.

Tribal Members,

Just a reminder, back country roads in the higher elevations have deep snow from the recent storms and in many places are impassable. Use caution while traveling these roads and exercise safety as your vehicle may not be retrievable. It is your responsibility to use common sense while traveling in extreme winter conditions. Safe travels both on and off reservation.
