With dangerously cold temperatures in our area, the Fort Gratiot Fire Department would like to remind everyone to practice safe heating habits at home.

If you’re using space heaters, keep them at least three feet away from anything that can burn and never leave them unattended. Plug heaters directly into a wall outlet and avoid using extension cords. Fireplaces and wood stoves should be properly maintained, and ashes should be disposed of in a metal container away from buildings. Never use ovens, grills, or generators indoors for heat, as this creates a serious fire and carbon monoxide risk.

Please take a moment to check that your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. A few simple precautions can help keep your home and family safe during extreme cold weather.

Stay warm and stay safe.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips from the Fort Gratiot Fire Department

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days of the year for cooking fires. Keep your holiday safe with these quick reminders:

👩‍🍳 Stay in the kitchen when cooking. Unattended food is the leading cause of cooking fires.
🐾 Keep kids and pets at least three feet away from hot stoves and cooking areas.
🔥 Keep flammable items like towels, paper, and packaging away from burners.

🦃 Turkey Fryer Safety
• Only use fryers outdoors on a flat, stable surface.
• Make sure the turkey is completely thawed and dry before frying.
• Never use water on a grease fire. Keep an extinguisher nearby.

🚨 Be Prepared
• Test your smoke alarms before cooking.
• Keep a lid or baking sheet nearby to smother small grease fires.
• Double-check that all burners, ovens, candles, and heaters are turned off before leaving or going to bed.

🍁 Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!
