One potential way to make a lot of money quickly in Arkansas Territory was to find deserters from the US army and turn them in for a reward!

Colonel Arbuckle put out this add for 2 deserters from his 7th Infantry regiment in June 6, 1826 in the Arkansas Gazette, offering $30.00 reward for each one brought back to face court martial. That is about $1,000 dollars in today's money!

He also put out two more ads offering the same reward for another 7 deserters, putting the potential payout for all 9 deserters at $270. In 2026 dollars that is about $27,000 maximum payout if all the deserters were captured!

With such hefty rewards offered, it is safe to say Col. Arbuckle took desertion from his regiment very seriously! We also learn the names, descriptions, and civilian professions of said deserters with these adds!

The Richmond Enquirer in Virginia reported the news of the creation of Cantonment Gibson on June 11, 1824 (reported a month earlier as noted "from the same paper of May 11).

It is also one primary source that confirms the reason for choosing the name Gibson was to honor the Commissary General Gibson!

Some soldiers at Fort Gibson were passing counterfeit bank notes (as detailed in our previous post) and two citizens thankfully began the process to see justice served.

When news of the fake money was brought to Captain Wager, he agreed to help civil authorities. The suspects managed to evade authorities, with one being captured, while the other escaped.

We hope you enjoyed this interesting story! Stay tuned for more Fort Gibson History!

The Arkansas Gazette published on May 10, 1825 a warning about Fort Gibson soldiers passing bank notes from two defunct banks! Illiteracy was still common in Arkansas territory, which definitely made it easier for the notes to be passed.

Thankfully two citizens brought their concerns (and the physical evidence of the fake bank notes they were previously paid with) to Captain Wager who agreed to hand the culprits over to civil authorities. Stay tuned later today to see the rest of the story!
