Aiming for victory on the field!

On August 29, Ssgt. Paul Hellwege took part in the 2026 Battle of the Bases Military Softball Tournament. He played several roles for the Fort Meade baseball team, including assistant coach, player, and Air Force Network Operations representative at War Media Activity.

Hosted by the Washington Nationals, the tournament united teams from local military bases in a spirited quest for the championship at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling Giesboro Park. The teams battle through 23 games to reach the final, they will step onto the field at Washington Nationals Stadium on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 2:00 PM. Fingers crossed for a triumphant finish!

Command of the Defense Information School changed hands today. ✨

Army Col. Jennifer J. Bocanegra assumed duties as the 22nd commandant, returning to the schoolhouse where she once served as an instructor and faculty member.

"For me, today is more than a change of command," she told the audience. "It is a homecoming."

Her commitment as commandant: preserve what makes DINFOS strong, prepare the institution for what comes next, and make sure every graduate sent to the force is ready when it matters most.

She takes the colors from Army Col. Richard J. McNorton, acting director of War Media Activity and outgoing commandant, who also retired today after 41 years of service. Since June 2022 he refocused the school on warfighting and readiness while looking after the people who carry that work every day.

Reflecting on four years in command, he said what stayed with him had nothing to do with programs or projects. "I will remember the people. The people of DINFOS have a rare combination of expertise, professionalism, humor, and genuine care for this mission and one another."

Passing the colors represents the transfer of authority and responsibility for the mission and the welfare of the organization from one commander to another.

Our thanks to Mr. Andrew Brey, principal deputy assistant to the secretary of war for public affairs, and Rear Adm. (Ret.) Hal Pittman, director of public affairs for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, whose presence and remarks honored both officers.

Welcome home, ma'am. Thank you for everything, sir, and best wishes in this next chapter.

Today, Acting Director Colonel Richard McNorton and Command Senior Enlisted Leader Master Chief Tony Koch led our WMA Town Hall, unveiling our new strategy: Aimpoint 2035! This new vision will guide us as we drive trusted communication that informs global audiences, leverage an AI-integrated framework, and ensure the Joint Force maintains decisive information dominance. Key topics of focus included strengthening our culture, formalizing excellence, and ensuring transparent leadership.

Today, the Defense Information School welcomed four exceptional members into the DINFOS Alumni Hall of Fame: Vice President JD Vance, retired Army Col. Jeremy Martin, retired Army Col. Rivers J. Johnson Jr., and retired Navy Chief Photographer’s Mate Donald “Chip” Maury. 🎉

Their collective achievements reflect the broad, enduring contributions DINFOS alumni make through communication, public service and professional leadership.

Thank you to our speakers, Andrew Brey, principal deputy assistant to the Secretary of War for Public Affairs, and Robert Hastings, former principal deputy and acting assistant secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, for their thoughtful remarks and for helping us celebrate this year’s honorees. We also appreciate Vice President Vance for sharing video acceptance remarks and reflecting on his DINFOS experience.

We are proud to announce that the War Media Activity invited USAF MSgt Ben Stratton at our Headquarters on August 6 for an essential professional development presentation: "QUILL: Practical AI for Public Affairs."

MSgt Stratton serves as the Air Force Public Affairs Agency’s Emerging Technology Program Manager, where he leads AI integration across the Department of the Air Force.

Having this training is a prime opportunity for our joint service members, DoD civilians, and contractors to gain actionable insights into how emerging technology is transforming strategic military communications.
