Be sure to congratulate Mike Newell on his retirement! Mike spent 29 years at Washington County DPW, first in the Solid Waste Division, quickly moving to mechanic in our main shop and finally as an award-winning Welder/Fabricator.

Mike approached every job with detail and perfection. He worked closely with field crews and engineering to design tools to make their projects safer and more efficient. His most recent work on our 2007 paint truck brought it back from near scrap pile to a great asset for line striping.

Congratulations Mike Newell!!

Each budget cycle, we discuss the various needs of New Yorkers and the priority they carry. Each year, it seems the Governor fails to adequately prioritize critical transportation infrastructure. Representatives on both sides of the aisle agree: and we must increase our CHIPS funding!

Frustration over annual funding short comings notwithstanding, we have more to consider with pending EV mandates. Our current roadways are designed with the weight requirements from combustion engines, not the axle loads of EV buses and mass scaling of EV pedestrian vehicles. The weight of these vehicles is significantly more than combustion engine vehicles and reduce the life of roads. If we do not get on top of it, we may never catch up. 🚌

Slow down in work zones! Speed is a leading factor in roadway incidents. Obey posted limits, watch for flaggers, and stay alert. County highway crews are on the job—your caution helps everyone get home safely.

After 40 amazing years, our DPW General Manager, Jim Hogan has retired! Jim has been an integral part of DPW since 1986.
From day one Jim has shared wisdom, laughter, and countless Jimmyisms. He has fostered and shaped the futures of new employees, reduced salt, had sleepless nights of plowing and emergency services, all with a passion of excellence. The list of his accomplishments is just as impressive as it is long.
His dedication and commitment have left a lasting impact on our DPW team as well as all county residents.
We thank Jim and his family for the devotion and support given for his entire career and wish him many adventures in retirement.
