This team.

Last week, after twenty months in command, I handed the guidon back.

They offered me the best lesson I have received as a leader.

A leader’s job is to create opportunity.

Individual opportunity.

Organizational opportunity.

The opportunity to care.

By allowing me to experiment, fail, and joyously telling me when I was wrong; they led me more than I led them.

I am so proud of the team we built, and the opportunity that we created as a result of your drive to suffer, fail, fall, learn, try again, and get 1% better each time.

The Blackhawks recently completed 3 weeks of Mountain Warfare training at Camp Ethan Allen and Smuggler’s Notch (Smuggs). Thank you to the 86th IN Brigade for getting our leaders trained and making this training a reality. Thank you to the Army Mountain Warfare School for equipping the Company and letting us train in your AO.

While there we experienced over 1.5 feet of fresh snow in week 1, wildly changing weather, and negative double digit real feel temperatures.

The day was the worst kind of cold; cold and wet. When we put our gloves back on, they were stiff.

Frozen stiff.

The morning had been spent burrowing uphill through feet of fresh snow. It was hard, tiring work.

Weather moved in. The precipitation was melting as it hit us. Soaking through the Army issued layers. Then the temperature dropped.

It could have been bad. Yet there were all smiles.

The Blackhawks are putting the Mountain back in 10th Mountain.

Other Blackhawk Company’s in 2BCT. We want to be respectful of the history of the Company. Is there any reason the company name should not be changed?
