Today we take a moment to reflect and celebrate the life of our beloved brother Merrick J. Bunstone, who 2 years ago today died unexpectedly following recent health issues. Merrick was hired by FDFD in February of 2009, and was nothing short of an extraordinary firefighter. His knowledge for firefighting and ability to teach younger firefighters is what made him so special. At the time of his death, he was also serving as our IAFF Local F-105 Union President. His never-ending devotion to the union is what made him an extraordinary President. He left behind a wife and two young daughters.

Today, members of the department are heading “up north” to see his family, his grave site, and pay their respects.

No one will ever replace Merrick. Though gone, he still lives in the hearts of all of us here at FDFD. We love you so much Merrick. We will never forget you.

24 years….

All of us at Fort Drum station 1 pay homage to the brave men and women who gave their lives during the attacks of 9/11.

“Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America.”
—Former President George W. Bush

We will never forget, we will never forgive.

The crew of Engine 1 took advantage of the weather today and trained on some different pump operator techniques as well as master stream operations while drafting from the dry hydrant at Re*****on Pond. Drafting is not a common practice for us at station 1. Our first due area as well as the immediate mutual-aid districts we respond to are commonly hydranted.

The crew was able to be exposed to the drafting process so that we are better prepared if the situation may arise.

On Tuesday July 22nd at 9:37PM, Fort Drum Engine 1 was requested on a 2nd alarm to the City of Watertown for a structure fire in a residential apartment building on the corner of Olive Street and North Rutland Street. Engine 1 and Chief 4 responded and upon arrival immediately began to ladder all 2nd story windows of the building. E1 was then tasked with the RIT assignment. A decision was made to bring crews outside the structure in a “defensive mode”. E1’s crew assisted Watertown with deploying additional handlines for fire suppression as well as securing additional water sources for their ladder truck to have a stable water source. E1 operated on scene for roughly two hours before returning to the Installation.

Chief 4:
A/C Donaldson
Captain Hambsch

Engine 1:
A/O Fountain
FF Heise
FF O. Simpson
