I'm telling the 10th's story through the adventures of John McCown, a falconer-turned-climber-turned-soldier who led his men to glory on the flanks of Italy’s Riva Ridge. But before Italy, there was Bivouac Peak in the Tetons, and a climb that would shape his future.

In early August, 1940, John and his partners made it three-quarters of the way up Bivouac's 2,000-foot south face before turning back to avoid an open bivouac.

The first ascent of the face, via a line on its far right-hand side, wasn't completed until after the war, when the 10th had revolutionized both gear and technique. On August 14, 1947, Exum Mountain Guide and future member of the 1963 American Mount Everest Expedition Dick Pownell made the first ascent together with future Academy Award winning filmmaker Paul Kenworthy.

The next ascent, which follows the broken rock just left of the sun-shadow line in the center of this photo (courtesy of Fabrikant), was completed on September 2, 1969, by American alpine legend George Lowe and Juris Krisjansons at IV 5.7 in approximately fourteen pitches of climbing.

How audacious was the 1940 attempt, and how did it foreshadow the leadership skills John would display five years later in Italy’s Appennine Mountains? Tune into Episode 11 to find out.

Happy Veteran's Day to those that have come before us, and to those that will come after us!

Happy Veteran's Day to those that have come before us, and to those that will come after us!

This Veterans Day, we honor the legacy of the 10th Mountain Division, established by NSP's Founder, Charles Minot "Minnie” Dole, during WWII. The 10th Mountain Division was known for its mountain warfare expertise. Many of its members later established US ski areas and advanced the sport. NSP continues to partner with the 10th Mountain Division and affiliated groups to this day, creating a legacy partnership that has lasted 80 years.

Today, we thank all NSP members who have served in the armed forces. Your dedication to service continues to inspire us on and off the mountain.
