Last week, the officers and leadership of 2-14 participated in Operation Columbia Inn, a 2 day training exercise focused on Alpine operations. The recent heavy snow provided the perfect opportunity for the Golden Dragons to get valuable training on critical cold weather task such as movement in snowshoes, maneuvering sleds, and setting up arctic tents and stoves. The team also had blocks of instructions on several key tactical operations such as engagement area development, air assault operations, and prolonged casualty care. The exercise allowed Leaders to get hands on training in difficult conditions, remain connected to our Alpine Heritage, and be prepared to fight and win in any environment.

In the month of November, the Golden Dragons conducted extensive and rigourous training in preparation for coming training cycle. Alpha company/ 2-14 IN kicked off with a team live fire exercise and integrated squad level training. From the 18th to the 22nd, the Golden Dragons then conducted a platoon level support by fire live fire exercise utilizing the weapons squad and integrated simulated fires to further enhance the training. Both exercises provided 2-14 IN with phenomenal oppurtunities to build esprit de corps and further increase light fighter lethality. Right of the Line!

On 8 OCT, the Golden Dragons held their Dragon Heritage Day to connect our current Soldiers to the rich and storied past of the 14th Infantry Regiment. The day consisted of the MOG Mile Run, LPDs led by Golden Dragon veterans, and culminating with a BN Ball celebrating our legacy. The MOG Mile began with a wreath laying at the 10th Mountain Division Mountaineer Memorial acknowledging the battles and campaigns in which 2-14 IN participated. The BN then conducted a 2.14 mile run in kit with weapons remembering the Golden Dragons who assisted in the evacuation of Task Force Ranger during the Battle of Mogadishu. Throughout the day veterans and alumni of the 14th Infantry Regiment led LPDs for all the Companies, speaking on their experiences as a Soldier in the unit. In the evening, 2-14 IN hosted a BN ball with over 450 Soldiers and guests attending. The event provided an opportunity to bring together our Soldiers, connecting them to the heritage and tradition of both the Army and the Golden Dragons.

In October, The Golden Dragon’s hard work over the previous months paid off with 98 Soldiers earning their expert badges. The battalions final total was 69 EIBs, 6 EFMBs, and 23 ESBs. This success is a testament to the training paths that our CMD teams laid out months prior to focus on getting Soldiers ‘Day 0 Ready’. Golden Dragons emphasized physical fitness, land navigation, and rifle marksmanship as tenants of success for individuals to earn their respective badge. The train up ensured we were sending the right candidates to the lanes, which led to the BN achieving 46% of its Day 0 candidates earning their badge and their place at the "Right of the Line".

In late August of this year, the Golden Dragons were proud to honor the heritage of the 10th MTN DIV and the history of the North Country with Operation Commando Summit. Soldiers were given the chance to quite literally “Climb to Glory”, with teams from across 2-14 IN and the Commando Brigade collectively ascending all 46 High Peaks in the Adirondack Mountain range. 1LT Nicholas Scandlon from HHC culminated his final summit, marking him as a single-season Adirondack 46er.

“We go where other’s dare not go!”

“Really, you learn about large scale combat operations because it forces junior leaders to operate in this decentralized and disaggregated way, where junior leaders have to make very real decisions about all sorts of things that light infantrymen need to be thinking about,” Ferguson told Task & Purpose on Friday.

Training in mountains also prepares soldiers to fight in other rugged, isolated, and austere environments because it forces junior leaders to work independently within the confines of a larger operation, Ferguson said.

More than 200 soldiers with the 10th Mountain Division collectively climbed the Adirondack Mountain Range’s highest 46 peaks in a single day. The soldiers braved cold and wet weather to climb the mountains. The event was planned like a military operation.
