Colonel James C. Bulkowski just wrapped up his participation in India as a Chief Observer Controller / Trainer during this year’s Yudh Abhyas exercise. The annual exercise, which commenced on September 17, brought together troops of an Indian Army mountain brigade and a company and brigade headquarters of the U.S. Army.
Held in the Ranikhet Cantonment in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, this marks the tenth time this exercise has been held with the Indian Army. Yudh Abhyas, Hindi for "training for war," began in 2004 and has moved from platoon-level operations to brigade-and battalionlevel operations.
The focus of this year’s exercise, which ended on September 30, was on conducting counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations in mountainous terrain in support of United Nations peacekeeping missions.
While the overall responsibility for U.S. forces during the exercise belonged to the United States Army’s Pacific Command (USARPAC), it was soldiers such as U.S. Army Reservist COL James Bulkowski of the Atlantic Division’s 3rd Brigade and elements of the California National Guard who made significant contributions to the overall success of the mission.
Atlantic Division Deputy Commander, Colonel Walter Thomas, II praised COL Bulkowski and the 3rd Brigade, noting that "COL Bulkowski’s mission in India is indicative of the high caliber training support that the Soldiers of the Atlantic Division provide during both U.S. Army and multinational exercises."
