I am proud to announce that the Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce has chosen our very own Mountain Medics as their Citizen of the Year for 2020.

This amazing group of volunteers give more than 20,000 hours a year to make sure our ambulances are staffed 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week to meet the emergency needs of our citizens and the visitors to Jeff Davis County. Plus, they volunteer as EMS instructors and CPR instructors; they volunteer their nights to be at football games and their Saturday’s to support our July 4th festivities and many other non-emergency related activities.

They work hard to keep their skills sharp and continually look for ways to improve. We recently had 4 of our medics complete a Paramedic program that was condensed from an 18-month course into a 10-month course (extended only to 11 months thanks to Covid-19). The school did not allow time off for holidays or normal school breaks and only made small adjustments due to the pandemic. They made multiple overnight trips outside our area to obtain their required hours in the back of an ambulance and in Emergency Rooms. They devoted 20-30 hours each week to class in addition to working full-time jobs and tending to their families and dealing with serious personal crises and yet, they persevered through it all to graduate on time and complete their national testing in one attempt. They chose to endure all of this to increase their ability to provide a higher level of care to our community; and they choose to do so as volunteers. Our new Paramedics are: Patricia Grado, Janet Greathouse, Matthew Miles and Audrey Torres.

It would not have been possible to keep our service running while their class was ongoing without the extra commitment provided by other members of our service.

In addition to the four above, Jeff Davis County is blessed to also have Jim Chandler, Darrin Crook, Clare Freeman, Ken Gossett, Andy Grado, Bert Lagarde, Bart Medley, Christi Pearson, Renny Spencer, Misty Sumner and Kristine Woosley. We also have two Paramedics who live out of town but volunteer when here visiting family, David McWatters and Jesse Stark.

I would be remiss if I didn’t also recognize firefighters Jim Fowler and Lonnie Hebert who volunteer as drivers when we are short-handed and Loren Spencer who often helps us find our way when in the DMR.

I am honored to serve with such a committed team of volunteers and Jeff Davis County is truly blessed to be cared for by our Mountain Medics.

I am grateful for each and every one of you. Each of you richly deserve to be named Citizen of the Year!

Don't forget that there is free COVID19 testing tomorrow in Marfa and Tuesday in Alpine. It is important for people to be tested even if no signs or symptoms as you can still be carrying the virus. The test is easy and painless now that they are using mouth swabs. You actually do the swab.

Before your appointment, make sure not to eat, drink, or smoke 20 minutes before swabbing your mouth.

Here is an instructional video on the mouth swabs.

As we have no EMT courses scheduled if you are interested in becoming an EMT, here is a reputable hybrid EMT program that is offering a discount.

01/10/2020

I apologize for no updates in forever. At this time we do not have any dates scheduled or planned for an EMT class. I will update this page if anything changes.
I will try and find links for other EMT courses and comment on this post with them.

Truly a sad day.

From Michael Scudder:

This is the worst day of my life. At 2:18 am my best friend, identical twin brother for 59 years, the best Paramedic I have ever known, the bravest, best Firefighter and Alpine Fire Chief ever and the the most friendly, selfless giving man I have ever known went to God after passing away in the ICU at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa after suffering septic shock. I have never cried as much as I have this morning. I am broken, I am destroyed, half of my life is forever gone, I no longer have my best friend to talk too, hang out with and work with. We celebrated our 59th birthday together on August 30th and had the best time ever at the Century Club Restaurant. We worked on vehicles together Friday and had a blast laughing together. The last time I saw him was loading him in the air ambulance Monday morning at 11 am. I held his hand and said "I"ll see later this isn't good bye". The Native Air ambulance flight crew were the best. They took excellent care of him throughtout the 35 minute flight. They arrived at the ER at OMC at 1225 pm. The last time I spoke to him was Monday night at 7 pm while he had to wait in the Odessa Medical Center ER waiting for them to figure out plans to get him to the ICU. He sounded so sick and could hardly breath wondering how much longer before getting a room in the ICU. I told him to hang in there and that I loved him. He was finally admitted to the ICU at 730 pm Monday night. I said we'll be there in the morning. I hung up and cried myself to sleep. Early Tuesday morning his wife Cathy called and said Mark had been intubated and put on a ventilator. We got up and Traci and I rushed to Odessa. When we were 10 miles out of Odessa, Cathy called and said Mark had suffered cardiac arrest but was successfully resuscitated. When we got there it was a horrific sight. I never got to talk to him again. Wednesday night Mark suffered a second cardiac arrest and was again resuscitated. The doctor felt if it happened again he probably couldn't be resuscitated. The doctor said there was no improvement on his condition, his Laboratory values and his organs were failing. He felt there was nothing left that could be done. Early this morning his heart stopped and we made the decision to allow him to pass away in peace. Please God, keep my brother happy until we meet again. My life will never be the same. Our family has been decimated. With his wife Cathy Scudder, Corey Scudder, Amy Scudder, Colby Scud, Traci Planck Felsot, Jessica Scudder Patterson, Matt White, Jen White, Cathy's sister Anna and Cathy's parents and my self, we stayed with him till the very end. Please pray for our family. On behalf of myself and our entire family we would like to thank our friends and everyone else who prayed, sent well wishes and thoughts for Mark. God please take Mark in your loving hands and protect him.

We are in the early stages of considering holding an EMT course in Fort Davis. We have created an online survey to see if we have enough interest in an EMT course from those in Fort Davis and the surrounding areas. If there is enough interest we will apply with the state to hold the course and then take applications. The start date would probably be late October or early November. This will be a hybrid course that requires the book portions, the videos, the group discussions, etc to be done online. There would be multiple long skills days held in Fort Davis. We estimate course cost in the $750-1000 range. Again this is just a survey to see if there is enough interest in the local area for us to justify the time and expense to create and apply for approval of an EMT course. Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey if you are interested in possibly taking the course.
