This shrub has one of the best jobs on the hillside, and one of the hardest. Mountain mahogany grows slow and deep, and its roots are basically what holds these rocky slopes together. It also feeds deer all winter, when almost nothing else out here is green. It can take years, sometimes decades, to grow back if it's crushed or cut through. Once it's gone, the soil it was anchoring starts to slide, especially after a hard summer rain. Some of the toughest work on this land happens quietly, underground, in something most of us walk right past.

“My roots are helping this rocky slope stay together, and it took decades to grow them this deep.”

By staying on designated trails, we can protect the plants, wildlife and landscapes that make these places special while supporting sustainable recreation for everyone.

Building partnerships

Because a strong economy thrives with a strong workforce, the Board of Larimer County Commissioners proclaimed the month of September as Workforce Development Month at their Administrative Matters meeting.

Colorado’s workforce professionals in our region and state, along with Larimer County Economic Workforce and Development, are committed to helping workers succeed while helping employers build the talent they need. “When you invest in someone’s skills and their opportunities to learn and grow, you’re also strengthening and building more resilient communities,” said Larimer County Commissioner Jody Shadduck-McNally.

Economic and Workforce Development’s core is connecting people and building stronger networks among education, economic development, and our workforce.
