Larimer County, we’re heartbroken to share information about a sudden and tragic loss within our agency.

On June 16, an LCSO Deputy, Sergeant, and Sergeant’s family member were vacationing together on a motorcycle trip. The men were traveling on a North Idaho scenic highway when a pickup truck attempted to pass another vehicle in a marked no-passing zone. The truck crossed the double yellow centerline and collided with the motorcycles, killing all three riders.

The truck driver was arrested and booked into the Idaho County Jail on three counts of vehicular manslaughter. Idaho State Police are investigating this crash.

Out of respect for their families’ strong desire for privacy, we aren’t identifying the deputies at this time.

There are no good words in a situation like this. Put simply, these were incredible people who dedicated their lives to making Larimer County better every single day. They trained hard, they served well, and they loved life. As we walk the long and winding path of grief alongside their families, our resolve is stronger than ever:

For them, we’ll bring light into dark places.
For them, we’ll stand for good and fight against evil.
For them, we’ll live each day with gratitude and carry their legacy forward.

➡️Know your evac terminology...
🟠Voluntary Evacuations: Gather belongings and prepare to leave if conditions worsen. If you have medical concerns, mobility issues, large animals, or other special needs, now is a good time to evacuate.
🔴Mandatory Evacuations: Collect your people, pets, meds, and GO. Do not delay - the fire poses a serious threat to life. Leave immediately!

HOLIDAY CLOSURE: Our Administration Building will be closed on Friday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.

While this is a federal holiday, our dedicated Dispatchers, Deputies, and Jail staff will continue serving 24/7 to support community safety.

This week, we welcomed 18 new public safety professionals to our agency!

Here at LCSO, every employee takes the oath of office. This includes our sworn deputies and our non-sworn professional staff. Taking the oath is a milestone occasion and affirms every person's commitment to serving with integrity, regardless of job title. We always enjoy the opportunity to celebrate this moment with our new team members and their families.

From here, their paths will vary. Some will enter our mini-academy to become jail deputies or reinforce skills that will serve them on patrol. Some will work through a rigorous dispatch training program. Others will begin onboarding to work in jail booking, crime scene investigations, evidence, and IT.

Whether wearing a badge and a uniform, wildland fire gear, or a polo and a lanyard, we all serve the same mission: Public Safety. Congratulations and welcome to our newest teammates!

🌟CASE FEATURE: A RIDE ON THE RIVER'S EDGE

Last week, a driver tried to turn around on Highway 14 in Poudre Canyon near the Mishawaka...

😃The good news: He was going relatively slow.
😟The bad news: He backed up a little too far and gravity wasn't on his side.
😅More good news: He managed to brake before fully losing control and narrowly avoided sliding into the river.
😬Bad news again: He couldn't safely get out of the vehicle as the front tires were the only anchor keeping him on dry land.

Responders from LCSO, Poudre Canyon Fire Protection District, and nearby US Forest Service staff arrived. The team quickly secured the teetering van by winching it to a Poudre Canyon Fire truck, then helped the driver get out. The secured setup held steady until a tow arrived and pulled the vehicle back onto the road.

As you can see from the photos, the van was only hanging on by about 5 inches. Without a quick response and fast problem-solving, it would have slid into the water with the driver inside. Fortunately, this ended with just a ticket - no injuries and no ride in the river. Thankful for the teamwork that safely resolved a potentially life-threatening situation!

Nobody plans to end up in a pickle like this. It's a good reminder for everyone heading into the hills this summer... if you need to turn around, it's worth driving a few extra miles to safely do so in a designated area!
