On the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, we remember Vincent “Vinnie” Speranza, a soldier assigned to the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), who fought during the Battle of the Bulge.

In December 1944, during the siege of Bastogne, Belgium, American forces were surrounded and under heavy enemy fire. Speranza stepped up and used his helmet to carry beer to wounded soldiers who could not move.

It is a reminder that courage is not only found in combat, but in how soldiers take care of one another.

The 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) story is still being written.

“The Screaming Eagle isn’t just a patch; it’s a link to those who fought in Normandy, Bastogne and Vietnam,” said retired Gen. Richard A. Cody.

As a lieutenant colonel during Operation Desert Storm, Cody led Task Force Normandy, the opening Apache strike that shattered Iraqi air defenses. Cody later served as the 31st Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army from June 24, 2004 to July 31, 2008. He retired Aug. 1, 2008.

Today, flight crews from 5-101 “Eagle Assault” supported events for the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Our UH-60 Black Hawk crews conducted a Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction System (SPIES) demonstration as part of a tribute honoring the late race car driver Kyle Busch, while AH-64 Apache and CH-47 Chinook helicopters flew over during the playing of the National Anthem.

As we remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation, we are proud to showcase the dedication, professionalism, and capabilities of the Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).
