1st Special Forces Command - Airborne If you're interested in joining the ARSOF team, visit goarmysof.com The Army 1st Special Operations Command was redesignated the U.S. Army National Guard groups.

Army Special Forces Command (Airborne) Nov. 27, 1990. The mission of USASFC (A) is to organize, equip, train, validate and prepare Special Forces units to deploy and execute operational requirements for the U.S. military’s war fighting geographical combatant commanders throughout the world. Within USASFC (A), there are five active component groups and two U.S. Each group has three line battalions,

a group support battalion and a headquarters company. The companies within the line battalions have six Operational Detachment Alphas, or A-teams, assigned to them. The ODA is the heart and soul of SF operations. Unlike any other divisional-sized unit, USASFC (A) components are not located in one place, but spread out from coast-to-coast and throughout the world. Each Special Forces Group is regionally oriented to support one of the war fighting geographic combatant commanders (GCCs). Special Forces Soldiers routinely deploy in support of the GCCs of U.S. European Command, U.S. Pacific Command, U.S. Southern Command, U.S. Central Command and U.S. Africa Command. Special Forces units perform seven doctrinal missions: unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, direct action, combating terrorism, counter-proliferation, and information operations. These missions make Special Forces unique in the U.S. military because they are employed throughout the three stages of the operational continuum: peacetime, conflict and war. Special Forces Command’s unconventional warfare capabilities provide a viable military option for a variety of operational taskings that are inappropriate or infeasible for conventional forces, making it the U.S. military’s premier unconventional warfare force. Foreign internal defense operations, SF’s main peacetime mission, are designed to help friendly developing nations by working with their military and police forces to improve their technical skills, understanding of human rights issues, and to help with humanitarian and civic action projects. SF units are often required to perform additional, or collateral, activities outside their primary missions. These collateral activities are coalition warfare/support, combat search and rescue, security assistance, peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, humanitarian de-mining and counter-drug operations. On an everyday basis, Soldiers of the U.S. Army Special Forces Command (Airborne) are deployed.

CSU SPOTLIGHT: The 7th Special Forces Group

Did you know that 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne) consists of 11 subordinate commands, each aligned with a distinct geographical area and specializing in unique areas of emphasis? This structure provides a diverse set of capabilities essential to the 1SFC(A) mission.

Each month, we will feature a different Command Subordinate Unit (CSU) to provide a deeper appreciation for the quiet professionals and enablers who make our mission possible. We invite you to follow this series to learn about the incredible teams that constitute the 1SFC (A).

Today, we spotlight 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

7th SFG (A) is headquartered at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, and conducts special operations throughout the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility to support command objectives and U.S. national interests.

Throughout its history, the Group has earned campaign participation credit in numerous major World War II campaigns, including the Aleutian Islands, Naples‑Foggia, Anzio, Rome‑Arno, Southern France—with assault landing credit—and the Rhineland. The Group has also received credit for operations in Panama and in Afghanistan during the War on Terrorism.

7th SFG (A) is one of the few U.S. Army units whose lineage traces directly back to the 1st Special Service Force, the elite joint U.S.–Canadian commando unit of World War II known as “The Devil’s Brigade” - renowned for their stealth and night tactics.

This heritage is unique because the 1st SSF was a binational organization, and its legacy of combined special operations is carried forward today by 7SFG(A).

This connection gives the Group one of the most diverse and multinational origin stories in U.S. Army Special Operations history.

When the Nation called after 9/11, The Legion answered. As the legendary "Horse Soldiers" of Task Force Dagger, they were among the first boots on the ground in Afghanistan, famously riding into battle on horseback alongside local forces to topple the Taliban.

Today, 5th SFG(A) continues its vital mission, maintaining a primary focus on the CENTCOM area of responsibility (Middle East and Central Asia). Their legacy of unwavering courage ensures that wherever freedom is threatened, The Legion will be there to answer the call.

The Special Forces branch was officially recognized by the U.S. Army in April of 1987. This formal recognition established Special Forces as a distinct career field, solidifying its organizational structure and professional identity.

Special Forces, or Green Berets, are elite master trainers who shoot, move, and communicate better than the indigenous forces they organize, advise, and accompany into combat. Green Berets can independently function in an austere environment, are skilled with foreign combat equipment and are known to be flexible and comfortable in uncertain situations.

Today we honored the incredible bravery and character of SGT Alejandro D. Rodriguez, who was awarded the Soldier's Medal, the highest award given for non-combat heroism, for his actions on October 9, 2021.

On that day, SGT Rodriguez braved the dangerous ocean waters at Middles Beach in Puerto Rico to save a fellow Soldier and, with extraordinary courage, recover another who was tragically lost.

His actions embodied the deepest meaning of loyalty and selfless service. We are honored to recognize his bravery, which reflects the finest traditions of the U.S. Army and is a testament to the outstanding service members of the 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne).
