The Fort Bragg Fire Department will be driving Santa through the streets of Fort Bragg starting Sunday, December 7th at 3:00pm. The FBFD has been chauffeuring Santa, acting as “elves” handing out candy canes to the community they serve since 1977. Several years ago, we added a food drive to the annual candy cane run. It has been amazing seeing how generous our community is when it comes to helping those in need. We will start at the south end of Fort Bragg, on Myrtle Street. Work our way through the neighborhood to Cypress Street. From there, we will head to the streets that are east of Harold Street. Working north to south we will cover the streets from Morrow to Hocker. A good way to tell that we are coming is to listen for sirens and loud Christmas music coming your way.
Tuesday night we will start on Susie Court at 5:00, then we will cover Harold Street and work our way west. We stop at 9:00, so wherever we end up, we will pick up at that spot on Wednesday.
This is one of the most anticipated events we have throughout the year. Getting the candy canes out to everyone, young and old, interacting with the people who support us, and collecting can goods for the needy. It is an incredible way to usher in the holiday spirit!

Outdoor burning on the coast. As a fire department we need to remind our community that there is a burn ban in effect. Burning during the burn ban can, and often does, result in significant fines. Even though the climate here on the coast varies from our inland neighbors, the burn ban is County wide. Many mistakenly think that it is alright to burn after it rains, that thinking can get you in trouble. Typically, Cal Fire lifts the burn ban around the 1st of November. It could change if the weather doesn’t participate as planned. Even after the ban is lifted, you still need a burn permit. The people in the Fort Bragg area can come down to the station AFTER the burn ban is lifted to get a permit. You can also get one from Air Quality by calling 707-463-4354.
To be sure you are burning legally, please follow these guidelines:
• Wait until the burn ban is lifted
• Get your burn permit
• Make sure it is a burn day (707-463-4391 or check the KOZT or Mendocino Air Quality web sites)
• Make sure you have adequate clearance around your pile (10’ minimum)
• Try to have water and/or tools to take care of any escapes
• Keep in attendance of your pile
• As always, only burn vegetative matter that was grown on your property
If we all do these things we should be able to continue to burn with support from all fire agencies who want unwanted vegetation gone before next year’s fire season.

The Water Fights will be held this Labor Day Weekend on Saturday afternoon starting at 2:00 on Stewart Street. The Water Fights are between fire departments throughout the county. In years past people would line the streets and watch the departments go head-to-head, pushing a tethered (empty) beer keg toward each other. The department who ended up with the keg on their side lost the round. We hope that you can make it out to watch this event.
