Congratulations to BM3 Aviles-Perez. Sta Noyo River’s newest coxswain. He found Oscar after a transiting MLB from another unit tossed it in the water and continued their transit creating a search and rescue drill of a boat taking on water. Oscar was found in the water just under two miles away in 6-8 foot seas from the last known position. Bravo Zulu!

It’s widely known military service members make great sacrifices in their lives. This is true, but their spouses are the ones who make the toughest sacrifices.

When transferring, the service member always has the members of his or her new unit to talk to, while the spouse starts from scratch, often with no family or friends in the area. This is emotionally challenging but they have to be strong for their children, who are going through the same challenges.

Coast Guard Men and Women don’t typically go off to battle a foreign enemy, however, they do often find themselves battling weather conditions most people would never dream of going out to sea in.

Think of those nights when your home is rattling in the wind and the children can’t sleep because of a thunderstorm. A member’s spouse sits at home wondering if his or her significant other is underway trying to save the life of someone they have never met.

While this is all happening the spouse is caring for the children, trying to stay calm and get some rest, knowing their loved one could be out there fighting to save another.

Today, May 9, 2025, is Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Go out of your way to thank a military spouse. They are the heart and motivation of all our military service members.

Thank you from the crew of Coast Guard Station Noyo River
