We remember the courage that still echoes through Carentan.

On June 11, 1944, Lt. Col. Robert G. Cole led surviving service members from 3rd Battalion, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), in a bayonet assault near Ingouf Farm. He later received the Medal of Honor for his courage and leadership.

The Screaming Eagles honored Cole at the Cole Monument in Carentan, France, June 4, during events commemorating the 82nd anniversary of D-Day.

Col. Ryan Bell, commander of the 3rd Mobile Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), gave remarks during the ceremony.

Today, on the 82nd anniversary of D-Day, we bow with gratitude before the courage of the Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) who fought on French soil to restore freedom.

The Screaming Eagles honored 20 U.S. service members who died in a C-47 crash during a ceremony in Picauville, France. The crash occurred during the June 6, 1944, invasion of Normandy, which began the liberation of France during World War II.

Maj. Gen. David W. Gardner, commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), gave remarks during the ceremony.

Last week, XVIII Airborne Corps hosted University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Chancellor Lee Roberts and senior university leadership at Fort Bragg.

The delegation met with Corps leaders, connected with Tar Heel alumni serving in uniform, and observed the mission firsthand.

The nation’s contingency force calls North Carolina home. Partnerships with institutions like UNC connect world-class research to the Corps’ most complex operational challenges.

Some moments are felt more than seen.

Maj. Gen. David W. Gardner, Commanding General of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), gave remarks at Cabbage Patch Square in Carentan, France, June 3, 2026, during a ceremony honoring the service members who fought to liberate the city during World War II.

Located eight miles inland from Utah Beach and behind what were once enemy lines, Cabbage Patch Square marks the site where U.S. service members began the bloody, close combat fight to liberate Carentan.

Following the ceremony, Gardner, Command Sgt. Maj. Christopher C. Goodart and the Screaming Eagles marched from Cabbage Patch Square to the Signal Monument near Carentan City Hall, carrying forward the legacy of those who came before them.
