1918-Founded on January 16, 1918
The history of the 27th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Airborne) begins on 16 January 1918 at Fort Meyer, Virginia, where it begins as t
he second battalion of the 37th Engineer Regiment. After the termination of hostilities, the unit was demobilized to wait for the next call.
1919-Demobilized in March 1919 at Camp Upton, New York
1933-Reconstituted October 1, 1933 as the 2nd Battalion, 37th Engineers
1941-Activated July 14, 1941 at Camp Bowie, Texas
The 2nd Battalion, 37th Engineer Combat Regiment was then reactivated for World War II on July 14, 1941.
1942-Redesignated August 1, 1942 as the 2nd Battalion, 37th Engineer Combat Regiment
1943-Reorganized and redesignated March 15, 1943 as the 209th Engineer Combat Battalion
The 209th Engineer Combat Battalion participated in the India-Burma Campaign, and Central Burma Campaign, in Bombay, India. While a part of Merrill’s Marauders, it participated in the attack and seizure of Myitkyina airfield.
1945-Inactivated November 27, 1945 at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey
The 209th Engineer Combat Battalion was inactivated at the end of World War II.
1947-Redesignated April 29, 1947 as the 27th Engineer Combat Battalion
1950-Activated September 18, 1950 at Fort Lewis, Washington
1950-Inactivated October 26, 1950 at Fort Lewis, Washington
1951-Activated March 1, 1951 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky
1953-Redesignated June 8, 1953 as the 27th Engineer Battalion. By 1960, the 27th Engineer Combat Battalion was named the “Tiger Battalion” because of its rugged field maneuvers and field training.
1966-27th Engineer Combat Battalion goes to Viet Nam
On September 30, 1966, the battalion entered the Viet Nam War, serving in 13 campaigns.
1990-Saudi Arabia
On August 23, 1990, the 27th Engineer Combat Battalion went to Saudi Arabia, to support Operation Desert Shield. On February 24, 1991, it was attached to the French 6th Light Armored Division as the lead engineer battalion for XVIII Airborne Corps during Operation Desert Storm.
1991-27th Engineer Battalion (Combat)(Airborne) returned to its current home Fort Bragg, N.C.
1992-Hurricane Andrew Relief. The 27th Engineer Battalion (Combat)(Airborne) deployed to Dade County, Florida, to support Hurricane Andrew Relief efforts. The battalion remained in Florida as part of Task Force All-American until September 26, 1992.
1994- Operation Uphold Democracy
On September 22, 1994, the battalion deployed as part of the 20th Engineer Brigade (Combat) to Port Au Prince, Haiti in support of Operation Uphold Democracy. The battalion worked with the 10th Mountain Division (Light) and established Base Camp Dragon and Castle.
2001-Kosovo peace keeping missions
At the end of 2001, the battalion deployed to Kosovo in support of peacekeeping operations. The battalion participated in many different non-combat operations to include snow and ice removal, cordon and search, road construction, and bridge and school construction.
2003-Operation Enduring Freedom-Iraq
In January 2003, the 27th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Airborne) was called to arms to participate in Operation Enduring Freedom. While operating in Iraq and Afghanistan in support of OEF/OIF, many companies had separate missions from Mine Clearance operations, to working with the 3/75th Ranger Battalion. Members of the Light Equipment platoon, and a squad of Sappers attached to the 3/75th Rangers all earned combat jump stars for their jump into H1 Airfield, Iraq.
2009-Task Force Tiger
In December 2009, the battalion transformed into a Route Clearance structure and deployed to Afghanistan as Task Force Tiger in Regional Command East, and some of its companies deployed under the 105th Engineer Battalion and then the 20th Engineer Brigade to Regional Command South. The battalion covered more than 108,000 km of road, and eliminated more than 319 IED’s and UXOs.
