They have been very flexible and useful mental health tools for commanders in both combat and peacekeeping operations. Some short tidbits on our history:
At the time of the Gulf War, the 528th Medical Detachment was the only corps-level active-duty mental health team that was deployed to Saudi Arabia. From late October 28, 1990, to March 10, 1991, the 528th Medical Detachment conducted a total of
514 psychiatric evaluations in-theater. The 528th Combat Stress Control (CSC) Unit reactivated on December 16, 1992, and deployed to Somalia in support of Operation Restore Hope on January 6, 1993. Mental health interventions of the 528th Combat Stress Control unit in support of Operation Restore Hope (Somalia) and Operation Uphold Democracy (Haiti) but, the mission to Somalia was marked by unexpected combat casualties. The mission to Haiti was marked by unexpected self-inflected casualties.
1994 Green Ramp MASCAL the 528th Medical Detachment (Combat Stress), was there to take care of corps units involved in the accident;

528th Combat Stress Center in Somalia.
528th Combat Stress Center, c/o 28th Combat Support Hospital, Fort Bragg, NC 28307, USA. Seventy-three Rangers were injured and 18 were killed after an ambush in Somalia. Members of the 46th Combat Support Hospital provided nearly continuous care to the wounded soldiers over the subsequent 36 hours. Members of the 528th Combat Stress Center provided psychological support to hospital personnel. Those who provide emergency services to trauma victims are often neglected in terms of the emotional trauma they experience in caring for the injured with the use of critical incident stress debriefings as a means to reduce distress in the wake of mass-casualty care.
