In mid-2004, the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized) began transformation to the US Army's new modular force structure. One of the most noticeable a
spects of the reorganization was the changes in relationships between Division level support units and the division's line brigades. Habitually attached engineer, military intelligence, military police, and signal assets were inactivated and reflagged as elements of new Brigade Special Troops Battalions, organic to the similar reorganized and re-designated Brigade Combat Teams. The 317th Engineer Battalion, 103rd Military Intelligence Battalion, 3rd Military Police Company, and the 123rd Signal Battalion were all inactivated. HHC, 317th Engineer Battalion was reflagged as HHC, 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion. The Military Police Platoon in the HHC came from personnel previously assigned to the 3rd Military Police Company. C Company, 123rd Signal Battalion was reflagged as B Company, 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion and a company of the 103rd Military Intelligence Battalion was reflagged as Company A, 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion. Since the organization of the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion in 2004, the unit has deployed in support of OPERATION IRAQ FREEDOM (OIF) III from January 2006-January 2007, OIF V from March 2007-May 2008 and OIF VII from September 2009-October 2010. In December 2010 two of the engineer companies that were original to the 317th Engineer Battalion were merged from 1-15 IN and 2-69 AR battalions to form Charlie Company, 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion. In May 2015 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion deactivated and the Engineer Company was reflagged as Alpha Company, 11th Brigade Engineer Battalion. In August 2015, the Army Announced it would be deactivating 3ABCT and re-organizing 1-15 IN into TF 1-28 IN. The Engineer Company was again reflagged, and stood up as F Co, TF 1-28 on 15 December 2015.
