Even in the age of drones and artificial intelligence, the U.S. Army is proving that nothing replaces the grit and violence of action of a United States Army Ranger.
As reported by the Military Times, candidates hoping to earn the coveted Ranger tab will now start the grueling Ranger School by conquering the brand new Bayonet Assault Course at Fort Benning, Georgia. Before they even reach the infamous Malvesti obstacle course, students must navigate a quarter mile of trenches, walls, and smoke-filled tunnels. Their mission? To go face-to-face with realistic enemy targets, testing their ability to fight at arm’s length and rely on raw fundamentals.
Command Sgt. Maj. Patrick Hartung of the Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade perfectly captured the mindset: “If all technology fails, [Ranger students] will have the fundamentals.”
The National Ranger Memorial Foundation exists to preserve the history, honor the legacy, and celebrate the future of these incredible warriors. From the legendary battlefields of the past to the cutting-edge training of today, Rangers continue to lead the way. It takes a unique breed of soldier to push through the exhaustion of the Ranger Assessment Phase and relentlessly move forward.
Are you or someone you know preparing for Ranger School? What do you think about bringing the bayonet charge to the forefront of modern military training? Sound off in the comments!
