Defense Logistics Agency (DLA)

Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) The Defense Logistics Agency is the Nation’s Logistics Combat Support Agency.

As the nation’s combat logistics support agency, the Defense Logistics Agency manages the end-to-end global defense supply chain – from raw materials to end user disposition – for the five military services, 11 combatant commands, other federal, state and local agencies and partner and allied nations. DLA’s mission is to “deliver readiness and lethality to the Warfighter Always and support our nat

ion through quality, proactive global logistics.” To accomplish this mission, DLA has a staff of about 25,000 employees divided into multiple supply chains that contract for material and services across the military classes of supply, to include: subsistence (food/water), clothing and textiles, bulk petroleum and other energy products, construction material and equipment, personal demand items, medical material and equipment, and repair parts for land, sea and air systems. DLA Quick Facts: As a logistics integrator and acquisition/service provider:
- DLA procures items from manufacturers and suppliers and provides them to DoD and other federal/state customers, with services such as warehousing, packaging and transportation;
- DLA contracts for items that are shipped directly by the manufacturer to military units and installations;
- DLA disposes of excess military property through reutilization, resale and demilitarization programs. What can a K-9 team teach us about the future of artificial intelligence? 🐾

The answer might completely change how you think about human-machine collaboration in defense logistics.

Episode 2 of DLA's "Decision Advantage: The Human-AI Advantage" series explores why the future of AI isn't about replacing people. It's about building a smarter, faster partnership between human expertise and machine capability.

The DLA workforce is already putting this into action, and the results are accelerating mission readiness in ways worth understanding.

Before Teams calls and digital dashboards, , then the Defense Fuel Supply Center, teams were supporting the mission with fax machines, paper maps, and some seriously iconic jackets.

Long before today’s global energy mission, DLA Energy built a worldwide network of regional offices to support military operations around the globe.

By 1991, the center was overseeing eight regions, half outside the continental United States and half inside.

Today DLA Energy relies on four regions (Americas, Europe and Africa, Middle East, and Pacific) for the receipt, storage, quality assurance, inventory accountability, and distribution of product.

What does it really take to understand global supply chains? Sometimes you have to leave the classroom to find out.

DLA students at the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy are doing exactly that: trading textbooks for real-world field study at cargo ports, warehouses, and military logistics centers to see the complexity of global logistics firsthand.

What did they discover along the way?

Did you know that D-Day can be categorized as a logistics operation?

The larger operation, OVERLORD, wasn’t designed to attrit German forces, secure key territory, or cut off supply lines.

Instead, it was intended to put enough combat power in Western Europe to secure a supply base.

For that purpose, the campaign’s initial goals were to seize the port of Cherbourg and deliver artificial docks called mulberries. America did so by deploying 130,000 men in the initial wave and another 1,200,000 in the next 90 days. According to historian Roland Ruppenthal, “at no point in modern warfare do tactics and logistics rub elbows so intimately as in the initial stages of a landing operation.”

What other historic military operations do you think were won on logistics? Drop your thoughts in a comment. 💬

That's a wrap on the 2026 DLA Supply Chain Alliance Symposium & Exhibition in Columbus, Ohio!

More than 1,300 representatives from industry and government came together over two days at the Greater Columbus Convention Center to deliver on the theme, "Deliver Readiness, Build Capabilities, and Enhance Logistics Deterrence."

One of the standout moments of the symposium was the fireside chat between DLA Director Army Lt. Gen. Mark Simerly and the Honorable Michael P. Duffey, Undersecretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment.

Key themes from that conversation included:

🔹 Reducing barriers for small businesses and new entrants into the defense supply chain
🔹 Using AI and automation to modernize acquisition and supply chain operations
🔹 Strengthening the defense industrial base to build surge capacity and long-term resilience
🔹 Reforming the acquisition process to level the playing field and make it easier to do business with the federal government

As Lt. Gen. Gavin Lawrence, deputy commanding general of Army Materiel Command, put it, sustainment can no longer be treated as an afterthought. It must be the decisive advantage of our future force.

Thank you to every industry partner, government leader, and attendee who made this year's symposium an incredibly productive two days. The conversations held will directly shape the future of defense logistics readiness.
