Water can play a significant role in winter solstice celebrations, such as taking an icy dip. These ice baths serve as a way of cleaning but that can only be accomplished in clean water. As winter approaches and ice and snowstorms occur, one way you can help protect water is by following the correct application of salt. This photo demonstrates the overuse of salt, which is costly, doesn’t improve safety, and ends up harming the environment. For question about using salt, other stormwater concerns, or to report pollution, email the Stormwater Manager at [email protected] or visit https://home.army.mil/belvoir/index.php/about/Garrison/directorate-public-works/environmental-division :0

Yard Waste Management is Stormwater Management

Did you know?

• Yard debris/waste includes leaves, shrub and tree trimmings, grass clippings, and other organic plant material.
• Yard waste can clog and block storm drains, pipes, and culverts.
• Yard waste can carry fertilizers and pesticides to our streams and water bodies.
• Yard waste can overload a waterway’s ability to process the waste causing increased nutrient pollution, oxygen depletion, and harm to aquatic life.

What can you do?

• Mulch grass and leaves in place.
• Blow grass and leaves back onto the lawn instead of the street.
• Compost yard waste at home or at a local composting facility.
• Select a location to create a layer of leaves and grass and let nature break down the material.
• If available, bag and dispose of waste at curbside collection or drop-off sites.
• Ensure hired landscape services follow proper yard waste disposal.

Stormwater is precipitation that does not soak into the ground and flows over the land where it can pick up pollution such as yard waste. Fort Belvoir has an extensive stormwater system that collects this water and discharges it to the local waterways. By following proper yard waste management, you can help keep the system working properly and protect our water. For question about yard waste, stormwater, or to report pollution, email the Stormwater Manager at [email protected] or visit https://home.army.mil/belvoir/index.php/about/Garrison/directorate-public-works/environmental-division :0
