District 1 Commissioner Lamarcus Davis joined county leaders from across the country June 1-3 for the County Leadership Institute (CLI), designed to enhance the capability of county officials to identify and implement innovative solutions to complex challenges facing county government.

Nominated by the Association County Commissioners of Georgia, Commissioner Davis joined 20 other county officials in this year’s CLI in Washington, D.C., where they learned how to effectively address the demands of personal leadership in a new era of government. The Institute was offered by the National Association of Counties (NACo). Commissioner Davis was the lone commissioner in the state of Georgia who was selected to participate in this year’s CLI.

Commissioner Davis said, “I have learned from past graduates how great the CLI is and how much they learned from it. I also believe in that in order to be a good leader you must first learn how to lead effectively. By attending the CLI, I feel that the new tools I have in my toolbox will not only help me become a better leader but will also help strengthen our Board of Commissioners.”

Throughout the three days, participants gained exposure to the adaptive leadership framework and were able to consult with faculty on a current challenge facing them and the community they serve. Commissioner Davis shared with his cohorts and instructors about the challenge that rapid growth represents for Monroe County.

Commissioner Davis said, “The most important thing I learned from the CLI was the Authority: Role/Hierarchy, which is P – Protection, O – Order, and D – Direction, which is the Contract for Service. I also learned to survive and thrive by staying connected to the purpose of why I ran for office. In addition, I learned to separate myself and the role I am in so that I can serve the citizens of Monroe County by making the right decision for all citizens by removing myself from the equation.

“The next step is to share with my colleagues some of the things I learned about and how they may be helpful to our Board,” Commissioner Davis said. “We are better together.”
