Potential Storms Could Impact Your Weekend!!!

Info courtesy of meteorologist Keith Stellman of the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):

BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT / OVERVIEW:

• Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms will be possible on Saturday (Aug. 1). Storms will pose a severe risk including damaging winds and frequent lightning. SPC has placed a portion of the region in a Marginal Risk for severe storms on Saturday (see graphic)

• Abundant moisture is expected to move back into the area and will also enhance the potential for very heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding with any storms. Localized rainfall amounts of 3" - 4" are possible by Sunday evening. WPC has outlooked the area in a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall for Saturday (see graphics)

• Some storms will again be possible on Sunday, however, there is a lot of uncertainty in both coverage and storm intensity for Sunday. For now, the greatest risk of storms will be across Middle and Eastern GA.

WHAT:

• Models are forecasting the potential for several rounds of storms on Saturday. The first round is expected to move into the area in the late AM or early PM. Some storms could be severe including damaging wind gusts.

• A 2nd round of storms is expected to develop over AL late in the day and move into the region late on Saturday. There is some uncertainty in the evolution of the 2nd round of storms which will be highly dependent on how the first round evolves and if the atmosphere can recover before those storms move in.

• Extremely high moisture content is expected to move back into the area, causing storms to be heavy rainfall producers. Localized flash flooding will be possible especially in areas where storms are slow moving or training of storms occurs.

WHERE & WHEN:

• Severe Risk is highest across Western and Northwestern GA early Saturday afternoon through Saturday Evening

• Flood Risk is highest across the entire area, however, the risk is likely highest along and north of I-20 where heavy rainfall has occurred in recent days.

IMPACTS:

• Downed trees and powerlines will be possible in stronger storms as a result of damaging wind gusts

• Localized flash flooding of creeks and streams / overwhelmed storm drains are possible due to very heavy rainfall over a short period of time.
