My week was off to a celebratory start by honoring Portugal’s rich history and the vast contributions Portuguese Americans have made to the Ocean State with a flag-raising ceremony in Bristol. After the ceremony we were invited to share in some wonderful food including the best homemade sweetbread I’ve ever tasted! 🇵🇹

I want Rhode Island to do more to help small businesses prepare before disaster hits. Small businesses are the backbone of Rhode Island’s economy. Forty percent of small businesses never reopen after a natural disaster. That should get our attention. We need a broader approach to resilience. Not just recovery after the damage is done. We need to have a more proactive approach. Real support before the storm includes better planning and access to help.

Ready, Set, Rhody, is a statewide initiative led by the RI Commerce Corporation and is helping communities and businesses prepare for flooding and other climate risks with practical planning and local support. And disaster preparedness toolkits can help owners build supply plans, communication plans, and continuity plans before an emergency disrupts their business.

If we want a stronger economy, we need to protect the businesses that hold our communities together. My vision includes a state that does more to help small businesses stay ready, stay resilient, and stay standing.

I recently visited the Rhode Island State Police Museum, where I reminisced with two former colleagues about “the good ‘ole days”.

I especially enjoyed visiting the display on the use of the polygraph in solving crimes, as my Dad, Lt. Everett M. “Gus” Armour, was an expert in its use and is featured in the criminal investigation display.

I have always been honored to wear and carry with pride the same badge number as my Dad, #16, during my time as a Trooper.

Earlier this month, I attended a conference for caregivers called Living Well Together: Empowering Older Adults & Caregivers. It was great to see many familiar faces and thank Deb Burton of RI Elder Info, NEIT and Just Ask for organizing such an informative morning.

Families across Rhode Island are caring for parents and loved ones every day. That work deserves real support. I want our state to do more for caregivers.

That starts with two steps:
Advocating for a family caregiver state tax credit;
and continuing to work towards a stronger continuum of care that helps Rhode Islanders age with dignity in their own homes.

This is about supporting families where they are. It is about making sure older adults can stay connected to their routines, their communities, and the people who know them best. I’m focused on highlighting this issue and building a state that respects both caregivers and the people they care for.

Thank you to Jim and Jill for hosting my fundraiser at Tavern on Broadway last week! Tavern means so much to our family, and I appreciate how small businesses like Tavern allow main streets to thrive.

Small businesses deserve a state government that listens to their concerns to solve real problems. As your next Lt. Governor, I will use my experience and skills to keep small business concerns front and center pushing for a state that works to make our local economy stronger.
