Not exactly a press release, but the story of placing this 1950 vintage Mack ladder truck BACK INTO SERVICE to respond to the Pentagon on September 11th, 2001 for the fire speaks volumes for our fire service resiliency!!

As our nation pauses to honor the heroes of 9/11, we remember the extraordinary courage of the first responders who rushed toward danger.

When dispatched to the Pentagon, Woodsboro Volunteer Fire Company's 1950s Mack Ladder Truck 16 was the only rig low enough to pass through the 10-foot entryways to reach the inner courtyard. Once inside, Chief Micky Fyock and his crew rigged a manual rope-and-pulley system to direct their hose, flowing water for 13 straight hours to hold back the flames before raising an American flag from their ladder the following morning.

We will never forget the lives lost and the incredible bravery of those who stepped forward when our country needed them most. 🇺🇸

25 years ago today, our nation was forever changed.

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the attacks at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Today, Harford County’s Fire and EMS community remembers those who were lost, the first responders who answered the call, and the countless men and women who served in the rescue and recovery efforts that followed. We also honor those who have since lost their lives from illnesses connected to their service at Ground Zero and the other attack sites.

For those of us in the fire and EMS service, the courage and sacrifice demonstrated that day remain a lasting part of our history and our commitment to serve.

25 years later, we remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Wherever you are tomorrow (September 11), please take a moment to reflect on this date in 2001. A beautifully clear September morning was forever etched into our collective minds as the worst terrorist attack on US soil was executed.

Our losses included fire, EMS, law enforcement, and military professionals, as well as innocent civilians on a day that changed this country and its mindset forever.

We thank and remember those that served our country 25 years ago and the sacrifices made by their actions, the unspeakable losses suffered by their families, friends, emergency service agencies, and governmental branches.

There are numerous memorial ceremonies scheduled throughout the day and evening to honor the fallen.

Harford County will host a memorial ceremony beginning at 9:00 AM at the Equestrian Center on N Tollgate RD in Bel Air. Join us in this solemn occasion as we recommit our mission in service to our citizens, while we honor the memory of our fallen brothers and sisters.

Today, the Aberdeen Fire Department hosted a “rest stop” for the 9/11 “Promise Runners”, a group that traverses the distance between Virginia and Ground Zero. These folks honor the sacrifices made by first responders, military, and citizens who were lost on that fateful day.

In conjunction with partners Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, Aberdeen Police Department, Harford County Division of Emergency Services EMS, Havre de Grace Ambulance Corps, and the City of Aberdeen, runners received hydration after passing the arch formed by Towers 2 and 3 hoisting a draped US “Garrison Flag”.

May we honor the memories of all who lost their lives on that day, 25 years ago.

**TRAFFIC ALERT** NEW TRAFFIC PATTERN ON MD 24 BRIDGE OVER I-95: Beginning Thursday, September 10, 2026, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) will implement a new traffic pattern on the MD 24 bridge over I-95. Under the new configuration, the two northbound MD 24 lanes toward Bel Air will shift left onto the newly constructed bridge span.

A barrier wall will separate northbound and southbound traffic.

An overnight lane closure and traffic drags may occur on northbound MD 24 on Wednesday, September 9, as crews prepare for the shift. Portable message signs are in place to alert motorists of the new traffic pattern. Dates and times are subject to change due to weather or other factors.

With northbound traffic operating on the new bridge span, crews will continue to work behind barrier walls to demolish the existing MD 24 bridge to make room for the northbound I-95 Express Toll Lanes (ETL).

The MDTA appreciates motorists’ patience and reminds drivers to slow down, use caution, and stay alert while traveling through work zones.

The Work is part of the MDTA’s I-95 ETL Northbound Extension Program between MD 43 and north of MD 24, which will help reduce delays and improve travel along northbound I-95 between Baltimore and Harford counties.

Today, we recognize and celebrate the hard work and dedication of the men and women who keep our communities moving forward every day. From our local businesses and workers to the countless volunteers who give their time to serve their neighbors, your commitment makes a difference.

🚒🚑 We especially want to recognize the volunteer firefighters, EMS clinicians, and support members who continue to answer the call—even on holidays, weekends, and family celebrations. Your willingness to serve others is what makes the volunteer emergency services so special.

As you enjoy the long weekend, please remember to stay safe, stay alert, and look out for one another.

Harford County to Hold 9/11 Memorial Event on 25th Anniversary of Terrorist Attacks

Twenty-five years after the deadliest terrorist attacks in U.S. history, Harford County will hold a public memorial in honor of first responders and other innocent victims of 9/11.

“Harford County will never forget all those who were lost, the families who still miss them, and the heroes of 9/11 who ran toward danger to protect their fellow citizens,” County Executive Bob Cassilly said. “Especially in America’s 250th year, I encourage residents to join us, whether in person or in spirit, to remember the victims of these terrible attacks 25 years ago and to honor the endurance of our great nation.”

The memorial on Friday, September 11, will be held from 9 – 10 a.m. at the Harford County Fairgrounds Equestrian Center on Tollgate Road in Bel Air. It will include a procession of firetrucks representing the county’s volunteer fire companies, and emergency and police vehicles. Musical selections will be provided by students from Havre de Grace High School.

📚🚌 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER! 🚌📚

The school year is here, which means more children walking, biking, riding buses, and being dropped off at schools. Let’s all do our part to make sure they get to and from school safely! ❤️

🛑 SCHOOL BUS SAFETY — RED LIGHTS MEAN STOP!

When a school bus has its RED LIGHTS FLASHING and STOP SIGN EXTENDED, STOP! Do not attempt to pass the bus. Children may be crossing the roadway, and a few extra seconds of patience could prevent a tragedy.

🚗 Drivers, remember:
• Slow down in school zones and residential areas.
• Watch carefully for children walking and riding bicycles.
• Put down the phone and eliminate distractions.
• Stop for school buses when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
• Remain stopped until the bus has finished loading or unloading, the red lights stop flashing, and the stop arm is retracted.
• Be especially alert during the morning and afternoon school commute.

👟 Parents & Students:
Talk with children about looking both ways before crossing, using designated crosswalks, staying visible, and following the directions of crossing guards and bus drivers.

🚨 Remember — getting somewhere a few seconds faster is never worth risking a child's life.

Let's slow down, stay alert, and look out for one another as we start another school year.
