Hudlow Fire & Rescue

Hudlow Fire & Rescue Provide Fire & Rescue services to Mt Vernon, Westminster and Cane Creek communities and also surrounding areas from the city limits to McDowell County line

Established in 1971, the Hudlow Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. was created to provide fire protection to the Mt. Vernon and surrounding areas. Prior to the creation of the Fire Department, citizens had to rely on responses from the Rutherfordton, Spindale, or Forest City Fire Departments. Hudlow has grown and now provides Fire and Rescue services to our citizens. Hudlow was the first fire depart

ment to provide medical responders and the first fire department to become rescue certified in Rutherford County, both in the late 80's and early 90's. We now have about 30 firefighters, including 1 full time firefighter and several part-time employees (also a first for the volunteer fire departments of Rutherford County).

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

The Hudlow firefighters are thrilled to announce a major accomplishment in reducing our District Insurance Rating. We have successfully lowered our rating from Class 5 to Class 4. Although this adjustment may seem minor to those without expertise in the insurance rating system, it represents a significant achievement. The revised rating will come into effect on February 1st, 2026.
