Some folks, on the lower end of the district near the Trevitz Station, might be wondering whats going on down there. Well its simple! The land you've seen being cleared was donated to us to put a landing zone for medical airlifts right there next to the fire department! Keep watching as we see that project come to fruition!

🏕️⛺️With the state-issued ban being lifted for 81 North Carolina counties, many of you are wondering about those campfires for upcoming camping trips.⛺️🏕️

📌If you are camping in a state park or other state managed camping area in one of the 81 counties where the state’s ban has been removed, campfires would now be allowed.

📌If you are camping in a privately owned or managed campground in one of the 81 counties where the state’s ban has been removed, the same would apply. Campfires would now be allowed as long as there were no local restrictions or permitting requirements to abide by. Check with the place you intend to camp before assuming a fire is allowed.

📌**UPDATE: Fire restrictions for Pisgah, Nantahala, Uwharrie and Croatan have been lifted by the USDA Forest Service as of May 4, 2026.**
If you are camping in a national forest anywhere in the state, campfires are not allowed outside of developed recreation sites. The USDA Forest Service enacted fire restrictions for all four national forests Wednesday, April 15. Until removed by the USDA Forest Service, those fire restrictions remain in effect for the Pisgah, Nantahala, Uwharrie and Croatan. For more information about the restrictions and what is allowed/not allowed: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r08/northcarolina/alerts/fire-restrictions-all-four-national-forests-north-carolina.

The lifting of the burn ban in 81 counties does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue or lift a burn ban within those 100 feet.

Saturday April 25th was Service Testing here at SDO. A group of both paid and volunteer firefighters joined together for a long days work of service testing our all our trucks. This exercise is done annually to make sure the pumps are flowing at the rate they are designed to, and is a requirement to maintain our departments insurance rating. Every year the department saves over $3000 by doing this testing ourselves. It's always nice to have this job behind us for the rest of the year!

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.

Fire danger is high, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Fires can start almost immediately and easily from all causes. Fires can spread rapidly and intensify quickly. Spot fires can be a constant danger.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.

Take a look at this! Arches over the bay doors! Beautiful rock work! Even walls and doors going strong in the bay area. We are still a few weeks out from moving over to the new bay area, but we are closer than we've been. We hope the community is as proud of this as we are! Keep in mind, this entire build is ALL GRANT FUNDED!
