OR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Fontana Police Department Addresses Reckless E-Motorcycle and E-Bike Activity

FONTANA, CA — The Fontana Police Department Traffic Unit has been actively addressing ongoing complaints regarding the unsafe operation of e-motorcycles and e-bikes throughout the City of Fontana.

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, at approximately 5:27 p.m., officers conducted an enforcement operation targeting reckless e-motorcycle activity. During the operation, officers attempted to stop a suspect riding an e-motorcycle; however, the suspect fled, leading officers on a dangerous pursuit through the Hunter’s Ridge area.

Fontana Police helicopter Eagle 1 responded overhead and successfully tracked the suspect while motor officers followed from the ground. The suspect eventually entered a water channel tunnel, preventing officers from safely continuing the pursuit.

Following the investigation, Traffic Investigators identified the suspect as a 15-year-old juvenile who had previously led officers on three additional felonious and reckless driving pursuits occurring on April 30, May 11, and May 12, 2026.

On Thursday, May 28, 2026, Traffic Investigators served a search warrant in the 5000 block of La Sarre Drive. The 15-year-old juvenile suspect was taken into custody without incident, transported, and booked at San Bernardino County Juvenile Hall. The involved e-motorcycle was seized as evidence.

The Fontana Police Department’s goal is to prevent serious injuries and deaths involving e-motorcycles and e-bikes within the community. Riders are responsible for understanding and complying with all applicable state and local laws governing the operation of these vehicles.
The Fontana Police Department will continue to maintain a zero-tolerance enforcement approach toward reckless and unlawful riding behaviors that place the public at risk. Parents of juveniles violating these laws may also be held responsible for their child’s actions.

These enforcement efforts are in direct response to the overwhelming number of complaints received from residents regarding reckless riding, traffic violations, and ongoing public safety concerns throughout the City of Fontana.

CHP Safety Training Course
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has created a free online electric bicycle safety course to help protect commuters and recreational riders. The Fontana Police Department encourages all e-bike users to complete a safety course prior to operating their vehicle.

The Fontana Police Department and Fontana Unified School District Police Department are continuing proactive enforcement efforts involving e-motorcycles, mini bikes, and other illegal off-road vehicles being operated on public streets, sidewalks, parks, trails, and school campuses throughout the community.

Many of these vehicles are not street legal under California law and are being ridden recklessly through traffic, near pedestrians, and around schools. Officers have seen violations including excessive speed, failure to stop for police, riding without helmets, carrying passengers illegally, and dangerous riding on sidewalks and bike paths.

Parents and riders should be aware that California law requires all vehicles operated on public roadways to comply with registration, licensing, equipment, and safety requirements. In many cases, e-motorcycles and off-road bikes do not meet those standards and cannot legally be operated on city streets or public property.

Violations may result in:• Vehicle impounds• Citations• Criminal charges• Juvenile referrals• Civil liability for injuries or property damage

Parents may also be held financially and legally responsible for damage, injuries, or criminal acts committed by their children while operating these vehicles.
Our goal is education first, but enforcement will continue when riders place the public, motorists, students, and themselves at risk.

We encourage parents to speak with their children about riding responsibly and understanding the laws before someone gets seriously injured.

The safety of our community remains our top priority.
