Idea Studio FDLPL Idea Studio is a public makerspace offered as a department of the Fond du Lac Public Library. It will have space for DIY programs.

The makerspace is a permanent do-it-yourself zone where people can gather to create, invent and learn. It includes work tables, equipment to use, display cases, a projector and screen, a demonstration kitchen and a digital recording studio. New equipment is being added all the time.

One of our regulars, Michelle, was in last week using the Glowforge Laser to cut out and score a daily calendar for her daughter. She has a little one at home and loves using the laser to make fun and practical things that essentially teach her daughter how to read and write. Michelle was super excited for this project so her little one can learn her months and days! She also used some acrylic to cut out some snowy winter themed trees ---- but we are hoping it really doesn't snow for quite a while here 😂

If you are interested in getting trained (or as we call it badged), it is a smart idea to get trained on our laser sooner than later! especially if you are planning on using the laser to make gifts in the next 2 months. Our next Glowforge Laser Pro badging class will be held on Tuesday, October 20th, from 5:30 PM - 8 PM. Registration is currently open on our webpage www.fdlpl.org/idea-studio and click on our calendar page.

This class is for patrons ages 18 and over. Registration and library card/account number are required to get badged. Space is strictly limited, so please cancel in advance if you are unable to attend so someone else can fill your empty spot.

For our October Creativebug Club we will explore making Spooky Specimens.

We will transform plastic toys with acrylic paint and mount them onto wooden plaques to create frightfully sophisticated Halloween home decor. Supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring in small plastic toys under 5" (not stretchy) such as insects, animals, skulls, bones- anything "creepy or spooky" for Halloween.

This event is open to patrons 10 years and older. Anyone under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entirety of the class. Registration is required for each person joining this class, so please sign up to reserve your spot.
Registration for this event is currently open.

If you are unable to attend, please contact the library to cancel your seat to give other patrons a chance to join the class.

Pat stopped in today for her first try sublimating a design onto a shirt. She had this 65% polyester & 35% cotton shirt to test out. It turned out great for her first try and now her head is spinning with more ideas for other cute sublimation projects.

Our next sublimation class will held on Monday October 19th from 6-8 pm. In this class everyone will learn how to use our sublimation equipment and they will also get to sublimate a patch for free. Registration for this class opens at 9 am on Monday October 5th. Space is limited so sign up as soon as registration opens if you want a spot

Monday, October 26th from 5:30 - 8 PM will be our next
"Badge & Make: Easy Sew " class.

In this class you will receive training on the Idea Studio's Janome sewing machines and you will also earn how to sew your own cute patchwork ghost pillow. Stephanie made this cute guy to match "The Little Ghost Who Was A Quilt" written by Riel Nason and illustrated by Byron Eggenschwiler.

In this training class, we will go over the use and operation of the Idea Studios two Janome sewing machines and learn how to make a simple patchwork ghost pillow that you can take home. You are welcome to bring in your own fabric-- we suggest white and cream-colored fabric for a traditional style ghost or bring in colorful fabric for a colorful funky ghost. We do have a variety of fabrics available for anyone who maybe not have any to bring with them. Please message us if you have any questions about this class to [email protected].

This badging class is for anyone aged 13 and up. Registrations for this class open up at 9:00 AM on Monday, October 12th. Registration and a library card/account number are required to sign up for this class

Tomorrow is already a new month so here is our badging class list for October.

Registration for each class opens up 2 weeks before class date at 9 am. Email us if you would like to set up a badging class outside of these class times and dates. We also offer video badging on our 3D printers, sewing machines, overlocking serger and our Silhouette Cameo 4.

Our October Creativebug Club will be open to anyone 10 and older as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian while the class is going. It will be a fun and easy craft using fake creepy critters and Halloween items to make a Spooky Specimen. Each participant will have the chance to make or 2 to take home with you. Can't make the class, but curious to see the project? As long as you have a FDLPL card, you have free access to all of the videos and learning tools provided by Creativebug. Check out the "Spooky Specimen" class and see what we are going to be creating.

Wednesday September 30th is our next Creativebug Club class from 6-8 pm. This month we will learn about book binding and book making. Stephanie will show some examples of the books she has made, plus everyone will get a chance to learn book binding techniques and try out their skills.

We will watch a few videos by bookmaker Faith Hale on Creativebug and learn as she demonstrates traditional bindings like a three-hole pamphlet to innovative structures like the blizzard book. Whether your style is precise or playful, in this class learn fundamentals of bookbinding and find a structure that ignites your imagination.

This class is currently full with an open waitlist. If you are interested in learning more about book making and book binding, stop in to check out some books in our Adult Nonfiction section on the second floor! Also, you can use your library card to log into Creativebug for free and watch Faith Hale's classes online from the comfort of your own home!!!!

Go hand-made (and human made) with our button maker!

In a world going to the prompts, Idea Studio is still a DIY-zone where you can get hands-on with the making - and one of the best opportunities for that in the space is also one of the simplest (and quite frankly fun), our Button Maker! Without any training, but maybe a little guidance your first few times through, you can make your own high-quality button using collage material, something you print out, or even something you draw!

While some of our drop-in material and activities are free, there is a $0.25 cost for supplies per button (and $0.10 charge per printed page if used). And though a straight-forward process, it still is pretty magical every time you get to see a new one made - and rewarding having done the making!
