A Professional Reminder From the Fond du Lac County Veterans Service Officer (Dave Tellefsen)

I want to take a moment to remind everyone of something that should never need to be said—but sometimes does.

Our staff is here to serve veterans. We will do everything we can to treat every veteran with respect, honesty, fairness, patience, and professionalism. We will listen, explain, advocate, and help whenever we can.

We ask for that same respect in return.

Being frustrated is understandable. Navigating benefits, claims, paperwork, and the VA system can be difficult and stressful. We know that. (We get frustrated with the system as well.)

But frustration is never an excuse for disrespect, personal attacks, threats, profanity directed at our staff, or abusive behavior. That kind of conduct does not make problems get solved faster. In fact, it makes productive communication much harder.

As veterans, we were taught that our conduct matters. We were expected to maintain discipline, integrity, and professionalism—even when things didn’t go our way. Those standards don’t disappear when we take off the uniform.

We don’t expect perfection from anyone, and we don’t expect anyone to agree with us all the time. We do expect civility.

If you believe we made a mistake, tell us.
If you disagree with a decision, challenge it.
If you don’t understand something, ask questions.
If you’re frustrated, tell us why.

We will listen.

But we will not tolerate abuse of our staff.

Our office exists to serve those who served our nation. We are proud to do that job, and we will continue to treat every veteran who walks through our doors with dignity and respect.

We simply ask that the same standard be extended to the people who come to work every day committed to serving you.

Respect goes both ways.

In partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Office of Field Operations (OFO) offers Veterans, transitioning Service members (TSMs), spouses, their family members, caregivers, and survivors the opportunity to participate in the Take Charge Tuesday, Financial Readiness for Life Financial Education series.
The series is designed to help address financial literacy gaps across the military and Veteran community and includes two programs:
• a free online portal with financial literacy information and resources at https://www.investor.gov/additional-resources/information/veterans, and
• a live financial education seminar offered once each quarter.

Seminar topics include investing beyond a military career, fraud prevention, and building wealth through saving and investing.

Topic: Building Wealth Through Saving and Investing
Date: October 6, at 12:00 pm (noon) Eastern Daylight Time (EDT)
Where: Virtual

The session will focus on “Building Wealth Through Saving and Investing” and will cover a three-step roadmap for building wealth, the role of tax-advantaged accounts such as 401(k)s and IRAs, responsible credit use, and the importance of maintaining an emergency fund to manage unexpected expenses and avoid unnecessary debt. Participants will also learn about the power of compounding, how starting to save and invest can make a difference over time, and how diversification may help reduce investment risk. The session will conclude with information on recognizing common investment scams and warning signs, along with steps to help protect personal information and hard-earned money.

Semper Fi & America's Fund Housing Insecurity Initiative is offering potential financial assistance with the following if a veteran meets their eligibility criteria:

• Entry into new housing — homeless veterans; first month's rent and/or deposit
• Eviction prevention — notice of eviction, pay-or-quit, notice to vacate required
• Utility assistance — requires an active shutoff notice with a future date of disconnection, or, if the utilities are currently off, proof that the utility is currently shut off or disconnected; necessity utilities only (gas, electricity, water, sewer)

This program is available for veterans of any era and is available nationwide. The veteran must have a minimum of 6 months of service and a DD214 or NGB22.

Disqualifying factors:
• Felony conviction
• S*x offender
• Dishonorable discharge (discharge must be characterized)
• Less than 6 months of service
