🌧️ Fun Fact Friday!

With all the severe weather and heavy rainfall we've experienced this week, it's a great reminder of the important role conservation practices play in managing stormwater. Practices like cover crops, grassed waterways, wetlands, and healthy soils help slow runoff, reduce erosion, and allow more water to soak into the ground instead of rushing into streams and lakes.

Every conservation practice installed on the landscape helps make our communities more resilient during major rain events! πŸŒ±πŸ’§

🌧️ Fun Fact Friday

Did you know just one heavy rainstorm can wash away valuable topsoil?

Soil erosion happens when rainwater carries soil away from fields, construction sites, streambanks, and even our backyards. This can lead to cloudy waterways and carry nutrients and pollutants into lakes and rivers.

πŸŽ₯ Check out the video below!

This is a section of Pipe Creek where a grassed waterway was installed. The video was taken after a large rain event this spring. You can clearly see where the clean water coming from the grassed waterway is mixing with the sediment-filled, or β€œchocolate milk,” water of Pipe Creek. This is a great real-life example of how conservation practices can help reduce erosion and keep soil out of our waterways.

Here in Wisconsin, heavy spring and summer rains can cause significant erosion in a short amount of time, especially on bare soil. Once topsoil is lost, it can take hundreds of years for nature to replace it!

πŸ’‘ Ways to help reduce soil erosion:

β€’ Plant cover crops or native vegetation
β€’ Use mulch in gardens and landscaping
β€’ Keep streambanks vegetated
β€’ Install grassed waterways or buffer strips
β€’ Reduce soil disturbance when possible
β€’ Plant rain gardens to help soak up stormwater

Healthy soil helps keep our water clean, reduces flooding, and supports strong plant growth. Protecting soil today helps protect our natural resources for the future! πŸŒŽπŸ’§
