We had our twice a year board retreat this weekend (really just more in depth board presentations), and I wanted to share some info I learned from American River College.

ARC shared the successes of their Embedded Tutoring, and I am so inpressed with the results.

Course success rates went up from 58% to 75%, a 17 point jump, in one year!

Embedded tutoring participants saw an improvement of almost three quarters of a letter grade.

First generation, low income, and students of color are thriving.

Did a tour of Oak Hall, FLC’s new state of the art science building, before our board meeting. I am so impressed with everything about this building!

First off, it was buzzing! Students working hard in labs, looking engaged! The view was beautiful. The classes offered sound like so much fun! There’s a fermentation chemistry class where students make beer and kimchi. A lab had wet and dry cadavers for nursing and EMT students.

I just can’t get over how much this building has to offer. It’s exciting!

At last night’s board meeting, we learned about the Los Rios health and wellness services for students. A few years ago, I had mentioned that I would love to see a support dog as a part of the program. Guess who showed up last night? Meli the dog 🐕

More importantly though, we heard about the amazing services provided at our health centers. Some of the services provided include:
- injury assessments
- over the counter meds
- party safe kits (including Narcan and drink spike strips)
- STI testing
- pregnancy testing
- flu, COVID, strep testing
- flu vaccines
- mental health services available 24/7

10,356 services were provided in 24-25!

100% of students were satisfied (98% very satisfied) with the services!

I am so proud of the work we’ve done and how this has positively helped our students and their families.

Congratulations to Dr. Powell!

Congratulations to Dr. Powell!

We are excited to announce the selection of Dr. Torence Powell as the next Chancellor of the Los Rios Community College District, pending the completion of standard HR processes and approval by the Los Rios Board of Trustees at its January meeting.

Had an awesome tour of Sacramento City College, thanks to our amazing tour guide, Vanessa! I was visiting with my high school, and can tell you that all the students and families were loving the tour! Tons of interest and questions, and helpful hints!

For example, it was highly recommended that students leave an hour break in between classes so that they can eat lunch! There are many great places to eat on and near campus.

Side note- there was a piano outside that people were playing, which was very neat!

Such an awesome night! Congrats Falcons!

I’m going to be a student at CRC! This is a partnership with the Elk Grove Unified School District for teachers who may teach the class in the future. Looking forward to learning and viewing things through the eyes of a student in our district!

Attended the 2024 Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce State of Hispanics today at Cosumnes River College. Wow wow wow! So many amazing individuals on several panels, leaving me with a lot of food for thought.

A common thread was that education is the foundation and catalyst for creating lasting, positive change and that representation matters. Education is not just a pathway to personal success, but it’s the key to building generational wealth, uplifting families, and empowering the broader community. Families can break cycles of poverty and contribute to the growth of their community.

By supporting our students, we’re not just empowering individuals, but uplifting entire communities. The success of one student can and does positively influence families and local economies. When students are given resources, mentorships, and opportunities, they then become catalysts for community growth and transformation.

Si Se Puede!

Took a field trip to Cosumnes River College with my alt ed students this morning. A big thank you to Traci, who led us around so we could hear about the automotive tech program, television and radio, and computer certifications. Bonus- student clubs were holding an event on the quad, where I was happy to support them by buying some lunch!
