Just a reminder: The Folsom Police Department will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on Friday, September 4, at a location within the city limits.

Our goal is simple: to keep our roads safe by deterring impaired driving.

If your plans include alcohol or cannabis, make a plan before you go. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare or taxi, or arrange a safe ride home.

One responsible decision can make all the difference and maybe even save a life. Thank you for helping keep Folsom's roads safe.

This enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Folsom Police Department will conduct a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and Driver’s License Checkpoint on Friday, September 4, 2026, during the evening hours at an undisclosed location in the city.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sergeant Paul Rice said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

Folsom Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational ma*****na are legal, driving under the influence of ma*****na is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

𝗙𝗼𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗺 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗨𝗜/𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀

On the evening of August 7, the Folsom Police Department conducted a DUI/Driver's License Checkpoint to help keep our roads safe.

During the operation:
• 809 vehicles passed through the checkpoint
• 40 vehicles were directed to secondary screening
• 8 citations were issued (5 driver's license violations and 3 open container violations)
• 1 driver was arrested for DUI
• 1 person was arrested on an outstanding warrant
• 1 vehicle was impounded

While checkpoints help us identify violations, their greatest value is preventing impaired driving before it happens. By announcing our checkpoints in advance, we hope to encourage everyone to make a safe plan before getting behind the wheel. Whether it's choosing a designated driver, using a rideshare, or calling a friend, planning ahead helps keep everyone safe.

🏆 Congratulations, Detective Alvarez!

The Folsom Police Department is proud to recognize Detective Austin Alvarez for his induction into the 2026 Third Congressional District’s Police Honor Roll.

Detective Alvarez serves on the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, where he works to identify and hold accountable individuals who exploit and prey upon children.

These investigations are complex, time-consuming, and often involve deeply disturbing evidence. Detective Alvarez consistently approaches this challenging work with professionalism, compassion, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to protecting victims and pursuing justice.

His efforts have directly contributed to the identification, arrest, and prosecution of offenders while helping protect vulnerable victims from further harm. His dedication and specialized expertise have made a meaningful impact not only on individual cases, but on the broader effort to keep children safe.

Congressman Kevin Kiley recently recognized Detective Alvarez on the floor of the United States House of Representatives for his service.

Congratulations, Austin! Thank you for your dedication to protecting our most vulnerable members of the community and for representing the Folsom Police Department with distinction.

Today is National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day.

This year’s theme, “Power of the Parent,” reminds us that one conversation can save a life. In our community, parents play a vital role in helping young people stay informed and stay safe.

What to know about fentanyl:

• It is a synthetic opioid about 50x stronger than he**in and 100x stronger than morphine.
• Just 2mg—only a few grains of salt—can be a potentially lethal dose.
• Fentanyl is being mixed into counterfeit pills that resemble Oxycodone, Xanax, Percocet, and other commonly known medications.
• Many victims never knew the pill they took contained fentanyl.
