Our community continues to receive phone calls from scammers using phone numbers that appear to be from real businesses, banks, government agencies, and even local numbers. Just because the caller ID looks real does NOT mean the call is legitimate.

A common scam involves someone claiming you’ve won money, a prize, or are owed a payment but they tell you that you first need to pay for:
• “Postage”
• “Taxes”
• “Processing fees”
• Or gift cards

That is a major red flag.

Please remember:
• Legitimate companies will not ask you to pay money upfront to receive winnings or refunds.
• Government agencies and businesses will not demand payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, or payment apps.
• Scammers often pressure people to act quickly and keep the conversation secret.

If something feels off, trust your instincts.

Before sending money or providing personal information, contact the Flushing Township Police Department at (810) 659-0809. We are happy to help you determine whether a call may be legitimate or part of a scam.

Slow down. Verify. Protect yourself and your family.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children put together a 7-minute interactive video that shows how children are contacted and exploited while using popular games and apps.

This isn’t happening on some dark corner of the internet. It’s happening on the same popular apps and games your kids are using such as Roblox, Minecraft, Snapchat, Discord and many other apps.

No parent thinks it will happen to their child—until it does.

Watch this video with your child and ask them:

• Would you recognize this?
• What would you do?
• Would you tell me?

Once a child is pulled in, fear and manipulation keep them silent.

Don’t wait for a warning sign.

Don’t assume your child would “never fall for it.”

Have the conversation now!

If you need help starting that conversation or want guidance on protecting your child online, contact our Community Resource Officer.

The Flushing Township Police Department is proud to stand alongside Voices for Children Advocacy Center in Genesee County in support of protecting children and strengthening families in our community.

This month, you may notice blue pinwheels placed around the police department—provided by Voices for Children Advocacy Center—as a visible reminder that every child deserves a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment.

As law enforcement, prevention starts with awareness and action. Recognizing the signs of abuse, speaking up, and supporting resources that protect children can make a life-changing difference.

We encourage our community to take a moment this month to learn, stay alert, and support efforts that protect our most vulnerable. It takes all of us working together to prevent child abuse and ensure every child has the opportunity to grow up safe.

Together, we build safer, stronger communities through protection and partnership.

🚨 HOME SECURITY SERIES – PART 3: SPARE KEY SAFETY 🚨

If you can find your spare key… so can someone else.

Hiding a key outside your home might feel convenient, but the reality is most of those “hiding spots” will be the first place an unwanted guest.

🔴 Common (and predictable) hiding spots:
• Under doormats
• Inside fake rocks
• Flower pots
• Above door frames

These aren’t hidden — they’re expected.

🟢 Safer options:
• Give a spare key to a trusted neighbor or family member
• Use a secure lockbox with a code
• Limit access to only people you trust
• Change codes periodically if using keypad or lockbox access

The goal is simple: control who has access to your home.

If a key is left outside in an obvious location, it can quickly turn into an easy opportunity.

If you have questions about improving your home security or would like recommendations, please contact our Community Resource Officer at 810-659-0809.

Stay tuned as we continue our Home Security Series, sharing practical steps to help keep our community safe.

🚨 HOME SECURITY SERIES – PART 2: EXTERIOR LIGHTING 🚨

Good lighting is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve the security of your home. Many crimes of opportunity happen under the cover of darkness, where shadows and poorly lit areas allow someone to approach a home without being easily seen.

🔦 Lighting helps remove hiding places.
Areas around your home that remain dark—such as side yards, entryways, and areas near garages—can provide concealment. Strategically placed lighting helps eliminate those dark areas and increases visibility around the parts of your home someone would most likely approach.

💡 Focus on lighting the areas people actually use to access your home:
• Front and back doors
• Garage and service doors
• Side yards and walkways
• Driveways and parking areas

🚗 Motion lighting over driveways can be especially effective.
Individuals attempting to break into vehicles often rely on darkness and the belief that they are not being watched. When motion lights activate, the sudden increase in lighting can expose suspicious activity and discourage someone from continuing.

⚪ Consider bright white LED lighting instead of traditional yellow halogen lights.

Bright white LED lighting typically provides clearer illumination and better color contrast, which improves visibility around your home. This can also help surveillance cameras capture clearer images of faces, clothing, and vehicles compared to the softer yellow glow produced by older halogen-style bulbs.

Well-placed lighting not only increases visibility for residents and neighbors but also improves the effectiveness of surveillance cameras.

The goal is simple: remove darkness, remove hiding places, and increase visibility around your home.

If you have questions about improving the lighting around your property or would like suggestions, please feel free to contact our Community Resource Officer at 810-659-0809.

Stay tuned as we continue our Home Security Series, sharing practical tips to help keep our community safe.
