Tonight was bittersweet for your Flushing Firefighters as we celebrated the retirement and proclamation by Mayor Karlichek, of our Battalion Chief Michael Badder. Being a lifelong, and current resident of Flushing, Chief Badder began with the Department March 13th of 1984 as an entry level On-Call Firefighter at the age of 18. He was promoted to Lieutenant on August 25th of 1993. Through many years of experience and training not limited to the operations level of HAZMAT, All pertinent levels of National Incident Management System, countless hours of mandatory monthly trainings, mentoring fellow and incoming firefighters, his commitment to this community and his department was always evident. He was promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief February 1st of 2001. Chief Badder was selected in the past by members of the Department as Firefighter of the year. He also served as Quartermaster for the Department ensuring all personnel were outfitted correctly and thoroughly with PPE. Chief Badder was always known as an aggressive interior firefighter and had considerable knowledge he was sure to share with new members looking to perfect the craft. Chief Badder was known more formally around the Department as “Mother” for multiple reasons.
The Fire Service is full of old traditions and one that is often generational. Chief Badder’s father, Floyd Badder, as well as his brother Jon Badder also served and still serve respectively with the Flushing Fire Department.
Thank you for your Leadership, Dedication, and your Passion for 40yrs Chief, you will be greatly missed!! Enjoy your retirement as you’ve certainly earned it.
