🚨 HOME SECURITY SERIES – PART 3: SPARE KEY SAFETY 🚨

If you can find your spare key… so can someone else.

Hiding a key outside your home might feel convenient, but the reality is most of those “hiding spots” will be the first place an unwanted guest.

đź”´ Common (and predictable) hiding spots:
• Under doormats
• Inside fake rocks
• Flower pots
• Above door frames

These aren’t hidden — they’re expected.

🟢 Safer options:
• Give a spare key to a trusted neighbor or family member
• Use a secure lockbox with a code
• Limit access to only people you trust
• Change codes periodically if using keypad or lockbox access

The goal is simple: control who has access to your home.

If a key is left outside in an obvious location, it can quickly turn into an easy opportunity.

If you have questions about improving your home security or would like recommendations, please contact our Community Resource Officer at 810-659-0809.

Stay tuned as we continue our Home Security Series, sharing practical steps to help keep our community safe.

The Flushing Township Police Department is fully funded through a millage, voted on by the taxpayers in 2015. The voters approved a 10 year millage of 3.4114 mills. Because of Headlee it is now 3.1720 mills. This millage expires December 31, 2026. The department receives no other other funding. No General Fund, no borrowing from the Water Fund, strictly operates from the millage.
The police department now has 10 full time officers, which includes a detective sergeant and 2 patrol sergeants. A K-9 officer, a drone and drone operator and a Community Policing officer. Two School Resource Officers, funding by Flushing Community Schools. The department has 6 patrol cars and is able to put 2 cars on the road most days.
With the millage expiring the township board voted to once again place on the ballot a 10 year millage proposal for 3.4114 mills. This should keep the department operating for the next 10 years.

We’re grateful for a community that supports us all year long and for families coming together today to celebrate. Whether you’re enjoying a peaceful holiday or practicing patience while spending extended time with relatives, we hope the day is filled with laughter, good food, and good memories.

While many are home with loved ones, some of our officers are working to keep things safe—quietly rooting for harmony, calm conversations, and zero “he said, she said” calls.

Wishing everyone a safe, joyful Christmas.

Thank you for allowing us to serve you.
