Milkweed Programs & Milkweed Market

Monarchs Need Milkweed. Monarch caterpillars only eat milkweed, and you can get milkweed plants from Monarch Watch, possibly for free! Just choose the milkweed program that fits your situation.

Free milkweeds for habitat restoration projects

Monarch Watch will once again be distributing free milkweeds for planting in large-scale habitat restoration projects Spring 2023. Since this program began in 2015, over 731,000 milkweeds have been planted in restored habitat throughout much of the monarch breeding range. New this year, we have added several more regions in California. To qualify, applicants must have a minimum of two acres (one acre or less in California) to restore to natural, native habitat, and have a management plan in place. Milkweeds are awarded on a first come, first served basis, so apply early.

Those awarded free milkweeds need only pay shipping/handling, which is modest compared to the value of the plants. Please help us spread the word by sharing widely. For more information and to apply, please visit: https://monarchwatch.org/free-milkweed-restoration

Free milkweeds for schools and educational non-profits

Schools and educational nonprofits may apply for a free flat of native milkweeds for a public garden or habitat space. Single flats of 32 plants (58 for Texas) will be distributed to recipients in the spring, while milkweed supplies last. The application can be found here: https://monarchwatch.org/free-milkweed-schools-nonprofits

Milkweed Market

Native milkweeds for gardens or habitat are available for purchase from our Milkweed Market at https://shop.milkweedmarket.org The minimum purchase is one flat of 32 plants (58 for Texas). If your space is not large enough for 32 milkweeds, share with your neighbors! The market is now open for pre-orders and availability is based on your ZIP code and our supply.

Monarch Conservation - YouTube

Have you been seeing more Monarch butterflies in the sky? Right now, they’re beginning their migratory route to Mexico for the winter. As they make the trip south, they’ll stop here in North Texas to fuel up on nectar plants for the journey. If you’d like to help them along the way, check out this Environmental Services video on how you can bolster their population by including specific plants in your yard or garden to help feed them.

You can also find resources from the Town regarding Monarch butterflies at www.flower-mound.com/garden. Want to know even more?

Monarch Watch Conservation Specialist Carol Clark will hold an in-depth class on this topic at the Flower Mound Public Library on Monday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. She’ll cover everything from the amazing story of the Monarch Butterfly’s lifecycle and migration, to common misconceptions about the small creatures, historic and current threats to Monarchs, and why Texas is a pivotal location for Monarchs’ future success.

Exciting prairie developments in North Texas! On Saturday, Oct. 1, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., at the River Walk Hall in Flower Mound, Native Prairies Association of Texas (NPAT) will be hosting an evening of great food, drink, music, AND conversation.
This will also be the start of something bigger.

Experts from the private, urban planning, property development, and natural resources sectors will engage in a broader conversation about how open spaces and prairies could coexist with regional urban development.
The evening will also raise vital funds for NPAT’s North Texas outreach, stewardship, and education programs. Director Dr. Carly Aulicky is working with local communities and landowners to appreciate, protect and restore native prairies. All for the benefit of people and biodiversity.
