Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and the Black Jack Fire Protection District wants to help you have a safe holiday season. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing tips on everything from kitchen safety and fire prevention to safe driving and keeping your home secure while celebrating with family and friends.

Candy, costumes, and safety! 🍭👻 Follow these tips so your Halloween is all treats and no tricks.

Halloween is one of the most fun nights of the year, but safety comes first! Keep your little ghouls and goblins safe with these tips:

✅ Wear costumes that are bright, reflective, and easy to move in
✅ Use face paint instead of masks that can block vision
✅ Carry a flashlight or glow sticks to stay visible
✅ Always trick-or-treat with a grown-up
✅ Stick to well-lit streets and sidewalks
✅ Check candy before eating

🔥🕯️ Choose safety first when it comes to candles.

Candles may add warmth and comfort, but they’re also one of the leading causes of home fires. Keep your home safe by following these tips:

✅ Blow out candles before leaving the room or going to bed
✅ Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn
✅ Never leave kids or pets alone with a lit candle
✅ Try flameless LED candles for the same cozy glow, without the risk

Here’s how you can make a difference:

· 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱: Keeping a clear head helps you think clearly and follow instructions.
· 𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵: Stay on the phone and follow any guidance they give you.
· 𝗚𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿, 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Every second counts, and accurate information helps responders get to you faster.
· 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘆, 𝗶𝗳 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲: Comfort them, control bleeding, or perform first aid only if you are able and it’s safe to do so.

Even while waiting, your actions can have a big impact on the outcome. Staying calm, communicating clearly, and providing safe assistance can save valuable time and even lives.

It’s more than neatness, it’s strategy. A properly packed hose saves space, prevents damage, and keeps equipment ready for action.

When the call comes in, every second matters. Organized hoses mean faster deployment, quicker water flow, and a safer, smoother response for the whole team.
