πŸ”₯ New York State Spring Burn Ban Reminder (March 16 – May 14) πŸ”₯

A reminder to our neighbors that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) annual Spring Burn Ban runs March 16 through May 14 across the entire state.

This restriction exists each year to reduce the risk of wildfires during the dry spring season.

🚫 What is Prohibited During the Burn Ban
All open burning is prohibited during this period, including:
β€’ Burning brush or tree limbs
β€’ Burning leaves
β€’ Burning household trash or debris
β€’ Burning construction or demolition material

Burning trash releases dangerous compounds such as arsenic, carbon monoxide, benzene, styrene, formaldehyde, lead, hydrogen cyanide, and dioxins, and is illegal in New York State at all times.

Burning leaves is also prohibited year-round in New York State. The DEC encourages composting of fall leaves.

πŸ”₯ What is Allowed
The following limited fires are still permitted:
β€’ Campfires less than 3 feet high and 4 feet wide
β€’ Small cooking fires
β€’ Ceremonial or celebratory bonfires

Requirements:
β€’ Fires cannot be left unattended
β€’ Fires must be fully extinguished when finished
β€’ Only charcoal or clean, untreated, unpainted wood may be burned

A fire pit is considered a recreational campfire and must follow the same size restrictions.

🌲 Brush Burning Outside the Ban
In towns with a population under 20,000, residents may burn tree limbs (brush) outside the burn ban if the limbs are:
β€’ Less than 6 inches in diameter
β€’ Less than 8 feet in length

However, this is NOT allowed from March 16 – May 14.
πŸ“ Local Town Restrictions
The Town of Monroe (population over 21,000) has a year-round ban on burning brush, meaning tree limbs cannot be burned at any time.

Other nearby towns with populations over 20,000 and similar restrictions include:
β€’ Town of Warwick
β€’ Town of Palm Tree

Nearby towns under 20,000 population may allow limited brush burning outside the burn ban, including:
β€’ Town of Chester
β€’ Town of Woodbury
β€’ Town of Tuxedo
β€’ Town of Blooming Grove

🏘 Village Restrictions
If you live in a village, open burning is generally prohibited year-round.

In the Village of Monroe, burning leaves, garbage, construction debris, or tree limbs is NEVER permitted.

πŸš“ Reporting Illegal Burning
If you suspect illegal burning, contact your local Police Department or the New York State Police.

Environmental violations may also be reported to DEC Environmental Conservation Officers (ECOs):
πŸ“ž 1-844-DEC-ECOS (1-844-332-3267)

Please remember: our volunteer fire departments respond to 911 emergencies only, so ensure it is an actual emergency before calling.

⚠️ Fire Safety Reminders
If you are conducting a legal recreational fire:
β€’ Do not burn on windy days
β€’ Never leave a fire unattended
β€’ Fully extinguish the fire before leaving

Please stay safe and be respectful of your neighbors.

πŸš’ Our local volunteer fire departments are always looking for new members.
Stop by your local firehouse and complete an application β€” they need you!

🚨 RESIDENTIAL FIRE SAFETY REMINDER 🚨
Orange County Emergency Services has seen a significant increase in residential structure fires linked to the use of supplemental heating sources, including space heaters and outdoor heating devices used indoors.

To reduce the risk of fire in your home:

πŸ”₯ Turn off space heaters before sleeping or leaving the room

πŸ”₯ Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn

πŸ”₯ Ensure chimneys and flues are inspected & in proper working order

πŸ”₯ NEVER use outdoor heaters or grills inside your home or garage

πŸ”₯ Plug heaters directly into wall outlets - do not use extension cords

πŸ”₯ Keep flammable items away from heat sources

πŸ”₯ Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly

πŸ”₯ Shovel out all fire hydrants – 3 feet in all directions!

TOWN OF WARWICK – TOWNWIDE STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED

Issued by Town Supervisor Jesse Dwyer

A significant winter storm is expected to impact the Town of Warwick beginning around 6:00 AM on Sunday morning and continuing through Monday morning. Current forecasts are calling for 12 to 24 inches of snow, combined with temperatures well below freezing, creating extremely hazardous conditions.

Our emergency staff and Department of Public Works crews will be operating around the clock, from the onset of the storm and continuing well after it ends, to keep roads passable and ensuring the safety of our residents. However, DPW, law enforcement, fire, and EMS cannot safely or effectively do their jobs if roads are clogged by unnecessary travel, accidents, or vehicles blocking snow removal.

Accordingly, I am declaring a Townwide State of Emergency and directing that ALL NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL CEASE for the duration of the storm.

If your travel is not absolutely necessary for health, safety, or emergency purposes, stay off the roads. This is critical to protecting our first responders and ensuring snow removal operations can proceed without delay.

🚫 NO PARKING ON TOWN ROADS

Effective 6:00 PM Saturday, January 24

Parking is prohibited on all Town of Warwick roads

Any vehicle parked on a public roadway that impedes snow removal may be towed immediately and without warning

πŸ”₯ WARMING CENTERS
Warming centers are available throughout the Town of Warwick for anyone in need. Please use these resources if you experience a loss of heat or power.

Town recycling will be pushed one day for all routes next week. No pickup on Monday.

Let’s all do our part during this storm:
βœ” Stay home
βœ” Be prepared
βœ” Check on neighbors who may need help

Keeping roads clear keeps our essential workers, first responders, and DPW crews safe and allows them to do the job our community depends on.

And finally β€” don’t forget to lobby your local school officials for a snow day on Monday β„οΈπŸ˜‰
