Beth loves historical fiction, especially WWII novels featuring strong women characters, so this book checked all the right boxes. What made it truly stand out, though, was its unique perspective.
Based on the true story of teachers and students at a missionary school in China who were later interned in Japanese camps during World War II, this novel explores a lesser-known side of the war. After reading so many WWII stories, Beth thought she had heard every angle—but this one still managed to surprise her.
Heartbreaking, hopeful, and beautifully written, “When We Were Young & Brave” is a reminder that there are still untold stories from history waiting to be discovered. “I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy character-driven historical fiction filled with resilience, courage, and unforgettable women.”
