Rancho de las Cabras is a colonial site that served as the historic ranching outpost for the most southern mission, Mission Espada, located just southeast of San Antonio, in modern-day Floresville, Texas.

On this guided tour you’ll explore the grounds with the Wilson County Historical Commission and the Canary Islands Descendants Association to learn about the vital role that this ranch played in sustaining life at the missions and the impacts on lives both in the past and the world today.

We encourage all to check out Texas Tribal Buffalo Project open house this Friday, September 4th, starting at 4:00PM. See their page for details.

Their reintroduction of the Buffalo 🦬 to its native lands is a welcome opportunity to our county and a great way of allowing the rest of us to become familiar with an aspect of our county’s history that was largely lost—until now.

While the oral stories of the Buffalo 🦬 from the First Nation peoples talk about this unique animal’s domain starting in Canada and roaming all through the U.S. lands and into northern Mexico, written accounts from early Spanish explorers document their existence right here in Wilson County.

Have you enjoyed the longest publicly accessible portion of El Camino Real de los Texas lately?

It was an enjoyable morning yesterday getting exercise and appreciating the wonderful Floresville Camino. Here are some pics of some of the sites.

Wouldn’t it be cool if there was a mural on the tanks along the Camino? The picture below is an AI-rendering of a possible mural depicting life in/around Floresville across the thousands of years of our county’s documented history.

It was a great morning at Commissioners’ Court where the Court presented the THC Distinguished Service Award to the Wilson County Historical Commission.

The County Historical Commission, as per state statute, is an all-volunteer, Court-appointed function of county government whose purpose is to preserve, protect, and promote the county’s history.

Members of the Wilson County Historical Commission are currently: Melinda Creech (not shown), Anthony Delgado, Jed Elrod, Sandy Migl, Richard Nimz (not shown), Steve Raabe, Tambria Read, Elaine Stephens, and Nicki Stohr.

The Court also approved the Land Legacy Award for Ms Ruth Mueller Ander who continues the families more than a century-long land stewardship of 200+ acres of property in Wilson County. Congratulations Ruth!
