‼️ Thank you Lucky Dog Animal Rescue for this partnership. You have just helped create a pathway to help more victims leave their abusive situations.

Threats and Harm: Between 71% and 85% of pet-owning women entering domestic violence shelters report that their intimate partners have threatened, injured, or killed their family pets.

Delayed Departure: Up to 59% of survivors of domestic violence delay leaving an abusive relationship out of fear for their pets' safety, knowing the animals might be harmed or killed in retaliation.

Control Tactics: One study found that 87% of batterer-perpetrated pet abuse incidents occur in the direct presence of the victim for the express purpose of revenge or emotional coercion.

🚩All too often we hear people say, "well it's just an anger management problem", or "they just need anger management".

📣Domestic abuse is NOT an Anger Management problem.
Domestic abuse is a CHOICE!

Perpetrators seek to obtain power and control over their victim-survivor and are very much in control of their anger.

They choose their moments, when to gaslight, when to manipulate and when to use physical or sexual violence. A calculated tactic to erode a victim-survivors sense of self and identity.

If perpetrators were unable to control their anger, they would be abusive to everyone, and not solely to their partners and children, behind closed doors.

Perpetrators manage their emotions well in:
*The community
*Around friends
*The court room
*Intervention Programs
*Probation
*Workplaces
*Contact Centers
And more…

Perpetrators don’t have Anger Management problems, They have accountability problems and are likely continuing to be enabled by those around them. If you or someone you know is using abusive behaviors, Alternatives to Violence is an evidence-based program to help get to the route of the problem of abuse. Call today to learn more: 843-673-2008.

It isn't too late to change, love can be healthy.

This is a different kind of thank you and recognition. We recently shared information about services that we provide and challenges that are specific to Marion County with the Smidt Foundation/Harbor Freight Tools Foundation.

Today, they recognized Michelle Brewton-Smith, our Family Violence Program Director for the care and humanity she bring to Marion County. This work does not often come with uplifting news. However, having communities that felt impacted by the words we speak and the struggles victims face, and wanting to make a change, helps us remember why we do all that we do.

Thank you Michelle. Thank you Robin, Julie, and the Smidt Foundation/Harbor Freight Tools Foundation. Thank you to those in the community who hear our words and pass them on, or continue the conversation.

Denim Week continues, and today is all about community. Real change happens when we come together. Preventing sexual violence is not one person’s responsibility. Advocates, educators, leaders, family, friends, and neighbors all play a role in creating spaces where people feel safe, respected, and supported.

Every conversation, every action, and every moment of support matters. Together, we’re building something stronger.

Denim Day is the longest-running sexual violence prevention campaign in the world. It exists to replace victim-blaming with support, awareness, and prevention education. By wearing denim on the last Wednesday of April, people across the globe unite to show survivors they are seen, heard, and that we as a society are pushing back on excuses that are used to justify sexual violence.

It’s time to end the excuses. Stand with survivors. Break the silence.

It’s Denim Week, and today we’re rewriting the narrative!

Together, we have the power to shape a culture rooted in respect, empathy, and understanding. When we uplift survivor voices and challenge harmful norms, we help create a world where people feel seen, heard, and supported.

Small shifts in how we speak, listen, and respond can create big change. Let’s keep working toward a world rooted in respect and free of sexual abuse, assault, and harassment.

📣Today, we’re kicking off Denim Week 2026! All week long, we’re coming together to uplift survivors, build stronger communities, and take action together.

We’re starting the week off with something that shapes everything: consent. Consent is a freely given, informed, and reversible agreement. Silence is not consent. Pressure is not consent. Coercion is not consent. Everyone has the right to decide what happens with their body.

It is time to change the narrative. It isn't "no means no", it needs to be "A clear, sober, and enthusiastic yes means yes". Not everyone is comfortable saying no, so we can't rely solely on that.

When we center consent, we create relationships and communities where everyone feels valued and safe.
Let’s start Denim Week by celebrating what respect looks like.
