Join educators and cultural experts for an engaging professional learning experience that explores Native American history, storytelling, and cultural traditions through authentic voices and hands-on learning.

Anita Flanagan of the Eastern Band Cherokee Nation will share the traditional stories of The First Strawberry and The First Man and First Woman, providing participants with a deeper understanding of Cherokee culture and oral traditions. Teachers will then participate in a hands-on seed bomb activity led by Ana Peeples, Site Director of the Florence Indian Mound & Museum, and receive ready-to-use lesson plans along with a copy of the picture book The First Strawberry.

Participants will explore connections to the 2024 Alabama Social Studies Course of Study. Ana Peeples will highlight applications for grades 3–5, while Seth Armstrong, Alabama Connections High School Educator and Public Historian, will connect the content to secondary social studies curriculum standards.

Following the two-hour inservice session, participants may choose to tour the Florence Indian Mound & Museum, a significant Homeland Site for tribes returning for Oka Kapassa, and learn about its historical and cultural importance.

Teachers who attend this training will also be eligible to register for an Oka Kapassa school visit or field trip experience at the Florence Mound on September 10 or 11, featuring presentations and demonstrations by Native American artists prior to the annual Oka Kapassa Festival.

This session provides educators with culturally responsive resources, curriculum-aligned lessons, and meaningful opportunities to bring Native American history and perspectives into the classroom.
