đź’ˇ Did You Know? You May Be Eligible for Medicaid Reimbursement for Home Care Services.

Applying for Community Medicaid with home care services can take time, and it's not uncommon for applicants to wait several months before services begin.

If, during that waiting period, private home care services were provided through a Certified Home Health Agency (CHHA) and paid for by someone other than the applicant or the applicant's spouse, you may be eligible to apply for partial or full reimbursement through Medicaid, depending on your circumstances.

Keep in mind: Medicaid will generally reimburse only for the number of home care hours it ultimately approves. For example, if you paid for 12 hours of care each day but Medicaid approved only 4 hours per day, reimbursement will typically be based on the approved 4 hours—not the full amount paid.

If you have questions about whether you may qualify for reimbursement or need help navigating the Community Medicaid process, we're here to help.

⚠️ Important Information for Home Care Recipients

If your home care hours are reduced or your services are discontinued, a fair hearing and aid continuing are not automatically granted.

Here’s what you should know:

âś” You generally have 60 days from the date of the notice to request a fair hearing.
âś” If you want your services to continue while you wait for a fair hearing decision, be sure to specifically request aid continuing.
âś” In many cases, aid continuing is available when a fair hearing is requested within 10 days of the notice date.

Missing these deadlines could result in an interruption of important home care services.

Applying for Medicaid home care services can be stressful — especially for families caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s or Dementia.

One issue we often see during home care assessments is that the nurse may rely heavily on the applicant’s answers, even when a caregiver is providing most of the day-to-day assistance.

For example:
A spouse may explain that they help with bathing, dressing, meals, medications, and other daily activities — but the applicant may respond: “I don’t need help.”

Unfortunately, this can sometimes lead to a denial of needed services.
Caregivers should be prepared for the assessment process and make sure the full picture of the applicant’s daily care needs is clearly communicated.

Understanding how these evaluations work can make a major difference when applying for home care benefits. Preparing for a home care assessment? Contact us today to discuss your situation.

When someone you love needs nursing home care, the first thought is usually: “Are we going to lose everything?”

The truth? That’s not always how it works.

There are a lot of misconceptions around Medicaid eligibility—and unfortunately, those misconceptions lead families to make rushed decisions or spend down assets when they may not have to.

There are actually multiple strategies that may help protect assets, depending on your situation:
✔️ Transfers between spouses
✔️ Strategic planning for single individuals
✔️ Options beyond traditional “spenddown”

The biggest mistake we see?
➡️ Assuming there’s only one path forward

You have options—and understanding them can make a significant difference for you and your family.

Received a Medicaid denial or reduction in services? You’re not alone — and there are options.

Maneuvering Medicaid denials and appeals can be extremely challenging, especially when important services are at stake. For many individuals and families, receiving a denial or reduction in services can feel overwhelming.

Here are a few important things to know:
⚕️Most Community Medicaid denials or reductions in services require an appeal with Aid Continuing within 10 days.
⚕️ Nursing Home Medicaid denials typically allow 60 days to request a fair hearing.
⚕️ Denials may be related to income, assets, a disqualification period, or insufficient approved service hours.

If your decision came from a Managed Long-Term Care (MLTC) agency, the process includes additional steps:
⚕️First, you must request an appeal with the MLTC agency.
⚕️If that appeal is denied, a second appeal must be filed.
⚕️Only after the second denial can you request a State fair hearing.

For Nursing Home Medicaid applicants, fair hearings are conducted before an administrative law judge and may take place in person or via Zoom.

Understanding the process early can make a big difference.
