Genesee County Animal Care

Genesee County Animal Care Official GCAC page We house stray dogs/cats, accept owner surrenders and have dogs/cats available for adoptions.

If you are missing a dog/cat, we urge you to come and search through our stray ward. We keep animals on a 7 day stray hold before they are evaluated, spayed/neutered and offered for adoption to the public. All animals receive vaccination booster shots, are dewormed and receive a flea treatment intake.

Meet Avery! 💜🐾

This beautiful pup just needs time, patience, and commitment. She’s been through a lot and has experienced so much instability, so things are more stressful for her right now. She’s working through some separation anxiety, but she can’t help it - every human she’s ever loved has given her up. 💔

“She needed a foster because she was climbing her kennel. She had broken toe nails and sore feet, which had been bleeding. When we picked her up, the bleeding had stopped. She was exhausted, lying down in a private room. She didn’t even lift her head to look at us. On the way home, she just laid down in the truck. The next three days, she just slept. No curiosity, no tail wags, and not much interest in us - just pure exhaustion.

There is still almost zero interest in bones and toys. She knows sit, but most of the time refuses and she doesn’t care if she gets a treat or not. We do have some new tastier treats we are going to try. She has slept in bed every night and she does like that. She seems to enjoy her walks, but she has an extremely high prey drive! That is about the only thing right now we are really working on while she learns to trust us. She is SO strong and can just about pull me across the yard when she sees a bunny.

BUT, with all of this, we do have some great news. We took her for a pup cup last night hoping she might realize we are here for her - and we know it helped! This morning I woke up to her pushing and nuzzling on me!! 😊” -Avery’s foster mom

⭐️ Avery is about 1.5 years old and 54 pounds. She’s looking for a family where she can be your one and only (no other dogs or cats) and would love to find a calm, peaceful household. She knows ‘sit’ and ‘shake’ and takes treats nicely. She is potty trained per her last adopter. She does well with children of all ages (meets required with kids under 5).

If you’d like to meet this beautiful girl, please send us a message here on Facebook so we can arrange a meet and greet!

MEET THE SECOND CHANCES CLUB! ❤️‍🩹🐾

These resilient souls have all been adopted and returned to our shelter. The reasons and amount of time they have been gone all vary, but the one thing that is consistent among each and every one of them is the difficulty and struggle they experience coming back. It is always very hard for an animal to start to adjust to a home and then have to come back to the shelter. They are left feeling confused, heartbroken, and unwanted.

In no way are we encouraging negativity, so please keep the comments positive. We are merely trying to shed light on this topic and get these angels readopted as quickly as possible.

Some dogs completely shut down when they are returned. Some panic - barking constantly, pacing, drooling, you name it. Some slump down in their kennel feeling defeated and wondering what it was that they did wrong. It breaks our hearts to see this every single time, and it never gets easier.

The silver lining of a return is that we are able to learn more about each individual dog. We get more information about the kind of home that would best suit them. We learn about their strengths and weaknesses, and it all comes together to paint a clearer picture of the dog’s pathway.

These dogs are that much more grateful when they do find their true forever families. They will show you every single day how thankful they are to have you and will love you unconditionally. They will be there for you on your good days, bad days, and everything in between. The only thing they ask for in return is your commitment, protection, and unwavering love.

🚨 PRIORITY DOG: MEET BISHOP 🚨

Have you ever seen such a handsome, sophisticated hippo boy?? 🦛

Bishop is a one of a kind pup. He’s defined by his resilience, zest for life, and love of snacks. This isn’t his first time at GCAC - his original intake was actually in 2023. He is back due to absolutely no fault of his own, and the stress of shelter life has been taking a toll on him since the moment he stepped paw back inside the building.

Bishop is getting back on track with his health, but he’d much rather do this in a peaceful home with his forever family. He is heartworm positive and will need to be kept on the calmer side while going through treatment. Once he gets the all clear, he will be a happy, healthy boy again and free of restrictions.

🐾 about 6 years old and 72 pounds
🐾 meet and greets required with other dogs
🐾 needs to go to a cat-free home
🐾 older children recommended (6+)
🐾 meets required with kids 5 and under
🐾 knows sit & shake; food motivated
🐾 will need an active home & lots of enrichment

Please help us share this wonderful boy. He’s had so much bad luck, and he deserves to finally get his happily ever after. ✨

BEEP BEEP… MAKE WAY FOR U-HAUL! 🚚🐾

This handsome hunk of a pup is so much fun. He’s a friendly, cheerful goofball who is just happy to be safe and alive. He’s our resident optimist - always looking for the silver lining, the bright side, the light at the end of the tunnel. 💡

This big, strong pup is playful, vocal, and highly food motivated. He can be a bit jumpy for attention and is still working on his manners. He does know ‘sit’, ‘shake’, and ‘down’, so somebody definitely put some work into him. He will throw his whole body at you in excitement from time to time, so he would do best in a family with older children (10+ recommended).

U-Haul is about 2 years old, 69 pounds, and dog friendly with slow and proper introductions. It’s always a good idea to bring the other canine members of the family along for a proper meet. He loves toys and would greatly benefit from having a fenced in yard so he can zoom and burn off energy whenever he needs.

Please help us share this spunky pup! 🐶
