Revitalizing Genesee County by acquiring, maintaining, developing and selling vacant land and homes.

Through partnerships with public, private and non-profit stakeholder, the Land Bank encourages reinvestment in tax foreclosed properties. Since its inception in 2002, the Genesee County Land Bank has taken the lead in applying the economic tools created under this new system by playing an active role in stabilizing neighborhoods and revitalizing the City of Flint and the surrounding areas. The Land Bank encourages re-use of more than 4,000 residential, commercial and industrial properties that it has acquired through the tax foreclosure process. This is accomplished through partnerships with public, private and non-profit partners as well as with the proceeds from the tax foreclosure process, proceeds from GCLB sales and rental programs, grants, loans, and bonds.

From slated for demolition to fully renovated. 🏡 This before and after shows what is possible when a vacant home gets another chance. This Land Bank property was originally on the demolition list, but instead of coming down, it was sold for renovation.

The new owners stepped in and completed a full rehab, bringing the home back to life and restoring value to the neighborhood.

When we can save a house instead of tearing it down, everyone wins. The block gains a home, the city keeps its housing stock, and a new owner gets a fresh start.

Removing blighted property can help make way for new investment!

This property was foreclosed in 2016 and transferred to the Genesee County Land Bank after it did not sell at auction. Located in one of Flint's older neighborhoods, the vacant and deteriorated house was demolished in 2024. The project was supported by an EPA assessment grant and demolished with Community Project Funding secured by former Congressman Dan Kildee.

We love seeing what is happening next. The homeowner next door is now replacing the roof on their home, an investment that can help preserve one of Flint's older houses and strengthen the block.

The demolition also creates a new opportunity for the vacant lot. In many cases, former demolition sites can be sold as side lots to neighboring property owners, putting vacant land back into productive use and giving residents more space to maintain, garden, or improve.

Blight removal is about more than taking down a vacant house. It can create opportunities for reinvestment, reuse, and preservation of the homes that remain.

As the 2026 Clean & Green season comes to a close. 💚 Seventy community groups spent the season mowing, clearing, and caring for vacant properties across Flint. Sixty-eight returned from last year, and two joined for the first time.

Here is what they accomplished together:
✅ Over 30,000 mows completed
✅ Over 6,300 individual lots maintained, more than 11% of all lots in the City of Flint
✅ Over 400 volunteers engaged every mow cycle
✅ Over 850 neighbors engaged throughout the season

These stats represent neighbors showing up, week after week, to make their blocks cleaner and safer. Thank you to every group, volunteer, and neighbor who made this season possible. We could not do this work without you!

ARPA Demolition Progress: More than 1,800 structures demolished

The Genesee County Land Bank continues to make significant progress on the demolition of vacant and blighted structures funded through ARPA and associated grants. As of September 18, 2026:

🏠 1,954 demolitions funded
✅ 1,820 structures demolished
🚧 102 demolitions on contract
📋 31 properties on bid
➡️ 1 property remaining to bid

Another 99 structures were removed from the demolition list, primarily because they were sold for renovation and reuse by new owners. While most demolition work will be completed in 2026, final site restoration will continue into spring 2027, with grant closeout expected by summer 2027.

This historic investment is helping remove dangerous structures, improve neighborhood conditions, and prepare properties for their next use.

Land Bank crews are making another BIG sweep through Flint!

The GCLBA's Summer Seasonal Property Maintenance crews completed their first round of mowing throughout the City of Flint and are now doing it all again. Crews are currently working on Flint's Eastside north of the Flint River in Area 14.

And there's a lot of ground to cover. The City of Flint spans about 34 square miles, and throughout the season, our crews mow grass, clear trash and debris, and help maintain thousands of Land Bank-owned properties.

Weather and property conditions can affect the schedule, but crews expect to complete at least two full sweeps of the city by early November.
