Racing returns to Cronin Derby Downs this weekend. ๐Ÿ After decades, the Flint Soap Box Derby is back at its historic home. The track, originally built under former Mayor Donald R. Cronin, has been restored with the help of a $750,000 community development block grant.

The Genesee County Land Bank deeded the property back to the city, and we are proud to have played a role in making this comeback possible. Saturday's event includes 24 participants from across Genesee County and southeast Michigan. It is free to attend. The winner goes to the World Championships in Akron.

The grounds produced three All-American Soap Box Derby National Champions in a six-year period between 1978 and 1983.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Progress looks different at every property, and at 2201 N. Dort Hwy (Former B&B Paint), it looks like this.

Many of the commercial properties in our inventory come with a history of contamination that can make redevelopment, or even demolition, a complicated road. That's why our partnership with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is so valuable.

EGLE recently completed cleanup work at this site, removing one of the structures to address contaminated soil underneath. While the property isn't ready for reuse just yet, this work is a critical step forward: reducing risk, clearing hurdles, and helping make a path toward the site's future.

Thank you to our partners at EGLE for helping us move properties like this one closer to new possibilities for our community. ๐Ÿ’š

Making way for more progress! This morning, the Genesee County Land Bank Authority arranged the demolition of a former funeral home in Flint to clear the way for a new football field at Berston Field House โ€” a project focused on investing in youth, recreation, and neighborhood revitalization.

The two-story building on E. Jamieson Street was originally built between 1914 and 1920 as a residence before being converted into the Wright Funeral Home in the 1950s. After serving the community for decades, the property sat vacant and came into Land Bank ownership through foreclosure in 2021.

Now, the site is being transformed into something new: expanded space for young people, recreation, and community activity at one of Flintโ€™s longstanding neighborhood institutions. This project is also being supported by a grant from the State Land Bank.

This is one more example of the critical role the Land Bank is playing in the historic expansion at Berston. In all, the Land Bank demolished more than 300 blighted structures in the area, improving safety, neighborhood stability, and overall quality of life. The Land Bank also made 70 properties available to Berston to facilitate the campus expansion and future redevelopment opportunities. This is truly what our work is all about.

400 new trees are coming to Flint! ๐ŸŒณ

The Genesee Conservation District is planting 400 trees throughout the city in rights of way, medians, and Flint Community School properties. The Land Bank is supporting the effort by storing the trees at The Yard, our central hub on Fenton Road, until they're ready to be planted.

From there, the trees will go into parks, vacant lots, school properties, and public spaces across Flint.

Learn more about the Conservation District's work at geneseecd.org.

Getting ready for the season. ๐ŸŒฟWe recently visited the seasonal maintenance crew training and saw our new team members getting hands on experience before they hit the streets.

These crews are the backbone of our property maintenance work. Through the season, they'll be mowing grass, removing trash, and securing vacant properties across Flint and Genesee County. They visit every Land Bank property in the city at least once a year, with special attention to vacant lots next to occupied homes.

We're grateful for the hard work and dedication of our seasonal crews. They keep our neighborhoods cleaner, safer, and greener all season long. Welcome to the team! ๐Ÿ’š

10,000 demolitions and counting. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ Since 2004, the Genesee County Land Bank has surpassed 10,000 demolitions across Flint and Genesee County. Each one is more than just a torn down building. It's a step toward safer, stronger neighborhoods and new possibilities for our community.

Take 3009 Corunna, for example. A longstanding blighted and dangerous property on a main corridor. Someone is now investing in the long abandoned adjacent building at 3019 Corunna and recently purchased the lot next door. These efforts have helped stabilize blocks, creating space for neighborhood gardens and green spaces like the MLK Peace Garden and Dupont Oasis, once blighted dumping grounds, now peaceful places for connection and growth.

Demolition has also paved the way for major reinvestment, including the expansion of Berston Field House, CMH's Center for Children's Integrated Services, and Clark Commons, bringing new affordable housing to our community.

Beyond these major projects, thousands of lots have become side yards, gardens, and spaces where residents are investing in their homes and their futures. We are honored to be part of this work, restoring value, creating opportunity, and helping reimagine what's possible for Flint and Genesee County.
