Last Friday, Rotary Club of Flint President Nick Godlesky really nailed his role...literally. He demonstrated the classic sideshow stunt known as the Human Blockhead, driving a 4-inch nail into his nose to the amazement (and slight discomfort) of everyone in the room. Thankfully, if things had gone sideways, we were in excellent hands with fellow Rotarian Dr. Bobby Mukkamala in the room – board-certified otolaryngologist and President of the American Medical Association. Fortunately, no Rotarians were harmed in the making of this video and Nick lived to preside over another meeting. Service Above Self? Absolutely. Nail Above Nostril? Just this once.

110 years ago today, the Rotary Club of Flint launched with 23 members. They included a dentist, physician, lawyer, banker, funeral director, pastor, nonprofit professional, and a variety of small business people. They were intrigued by this rather new concept of Rotary, which existed to connect professionals of diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas, form friendships, and give back to their communities.

Today, some things have changed-- we have embraced women's leadership and updated our areas of focus to include things like the environment. Our club is now one of 45,000 around the world in almost every country. The Rotary Club of Flint has built relationships with partners in Haiti, India, Lebanon, and Russia.

Yet, the core of our purpose has stayed the same. We still link people in our community from a variety of sectors who are united in our commitment to Service Above Self. (And we still have a variety of dentists, bankers, nonprofit professionals, and small business people!) Maybe you will join us next.

Cheers to 110 years!
